The aim of this research is to study the effect of an activating flux, two shielding gases (100%Ar and 50%Ar z 50%He) and a range of weld currents on the microstructure of autogeneous A-TIG welds on an austenitic stainless steel. Metallographic, Mössbauer, X-ray diffraction and magnetic permeability methods were used in the study to evaluate ferrite content in the welds. The increase in welding current coarsened the microstructure and increased the retained ferrite content in welds made with and ...

During electro discharge machining (EDM) a characteristic residual stress profile is formed. The process is essentially thermal and leads to tensile residual stresses at the surface. The profile form is independent from the discharge energy. However, the profile depth, the maximum value of the tensile residual stresses and the depth where the maximum is observed are found to be energy dependent. The residual stress profile is characterised by an increase from a certain tensile value at the surface ...

Two experimental methods to characterize the mechanical behavior of work-hardened surface layers of metallic materials, induced by mechanical surface treatments, are described and discussed. The study was conducted using two steels with different mechanical properties, subjected to a similar shot-peening treatment. To characterize the elastic–plastic behavior of the surface layers affected by shot-peening, the X-ray diffraction assisted four-point bending method (XRDABM) and the normalized hardness ...

Surface integrity of machined components has a critical impact on their performance. Magnesium alloys are lightweight materials used in the transportation industry and are also emerging as a potential material for biodegradable medical implants. Surface integrity factors, such as grain size, crystallographic orientation and residual stress, have been proved to remarkably influence the functional performance of magnesium alloys, including corrosion/wear resistance and fatigue life. In this study, ...

In this work, a methodology to quantify the effect of the drilling operation, during the application of the incremental hole-drilling technique (IHD) for measuring residual stresses in laminate composites, in particular, the polymer matrix composites (PMC), is presented. This technique will allow the optimization of the drilling procedures and its parameters, enabling the quantification of the drilling effect. This quantification is obtained by using an experimental calibration procedure followed ...

Surface integrity of machined products has a critical impact on their functional performance. Magnesium alloys are lightweight materials for transportation industry and are also emerging as a potential material for temporary biomedical implants. However, their unsatisfactory corrosion resistance limits their application to a great extent. Surface integrity factors, such as grain size, crystallographic orientation and residual stresses, were reported to have significant influence on corrosion resistance ...

The major challenge of the Mg alloys has been their unsatisfactory corrosion resistance, which can be enhanced by improving the surface integrity. Cryogenic machining, where liquid nitrogen was used during machining, has been reported to improve the surface integrity of machined components, including compressive residual stresses. This paper analyses the influence of several cutting parameters, tool geometry and cryogenic conditions on the surface and subsurface residual stresses distribution.

The corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys depends mainly on its surface integrity. Previous experimental studies have shown that machining can induces small (nano-scale) grain size, compressive residual stresses and basal plane crystallographic texture, which significantly improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy. These studies have focused on the positive effects of cryogenic cooling and tool edge radius preparation. In this paper, the influence of a wide range of cutting process parameters ( ...

Residual strains induced by drilling of glass-fibre reinforced polymers (GFRPs) were determined using a hybrid experimental–numerical methodology. Experimentally, a set of GFRP specimens were drilled under well-defined tensile (calibration) stresses, using an especially designed tensile test device. Numerically, the experimental procedure was simulated using the finite ...

Farming of Amazonian native fish species holds great promise. One species whose characteristics make it suitable for intensive farming is tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). However, there is a lack of consensus about the most suitable stocking density (SD) for intensive farming. More information on the physiology of fish in farming systems is thus required, as this would increase our understanding of the effects of stress on these fish. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the effect of different ...

These requirements often lead to post-processing operations through ...

The paper presents a Finite Element Modelling (FEM) of the turning process on the Nickel superalloy IN718 produced by the Direct Energy Deposition (DED) to predict the residual stress. The material behaviour was implemented by a customized user-routine to take into account the anisotropy of the material due to the DED process. The residual stresses were experimentally measured on the surface and beneath the machined surface and the data collected were used to validate the FEM model.
