Aquaporins (AQPs) are water channels that allow cells to rapidly alter their membrane water permeability. A convenient model for studying AQP expression and activity regulation is Black Mexican Sweet (BMS) maize cultured cells. In an attempt to correlate membrane osmotic water permeability coefficient (P(f)) with AQP gene expression, we first examined the expression pattern of 33 AQP genes using macro-array hybridization. We detected the expression of 18 different isoforms representing the four AQP ...

Plant plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIP) cluster in two phylogenetic groups, PIP1 and PIP2 that have different water channel activities when expressed in Xenopus oocytes. PIP2s induce a marked increase of the membrane osmotic water-permeability coefficient (P(f)), whereas PIP1s are generally inactive. Here we report the cloning of two durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum) cDNAs encoding TdPIP1;1 and TdPIP2;1 belonging to the PIP1 and PIP2 subfamilies, respectively. Contrary to TdPIP1; ...

AQPs (aquaporins) are conserved in all kingdoms of life and facilitate the rapid diffusion of water and/or other small solutes across cell membranes. Among the different plant AQPs, PIPs (plasma membrane intrinsic proteins), which fall into two phylogenetic groups, PIP1 and PIP2, play key roles in plant water transport processes. PIPs form tetramers in which each monomer acts as a functional channel. The intermolecular interactions that stabilize PIP oligomer complexes and are responsible for the ...

Abstract Plant plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs) are aquaporins that facilitate the passive movement of water and small neutral solutes through biological membranes. Here, we report that post-Golgi trafficking of PIP2;7 in Arabidopsis thaliana involves specific interactions with two syntaxin proteins, namely, the Qc-SNARE SYP61 and the Qa-SNARE SYP121, that the proper delivery of PIP2;7 to the plasma membrane depends on the activity of the two SNAREs, and that the SNAREs colocalize and physically ...

Primary aortic thrombosis remains a rare entity that can be defined as clotting of the vessel without any obvious atheromatous lesion. Cancer chemotherapy, cocaine intake, essential thrombocythemia, some hypercoagulable states, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, inflammatory disease of the digestive tract and acute pancreatitis are, beside some cases of rather unknown etiology, the causes of primary aortic thrombosis. Intravenous contrast-enhanced multislice CT, which is widely available, noninvasive ...

Various aluminosilicate hydrogels having the composition 106 SiO2. 26 Na2O, Al2O3. 17.3 H2SO4.. 47 NaCl. 2400 H2O. 9 R, where R is a mono- di- or trialkylamine, a diaminoalkane or a tetraalkylammonium (Alk4N+) cation, have been left to crystallize in sealed Pyrex autoclaves at 140°C. The resulting crystalline zeolitic phaases were analyzed by a variety of techniques: PIGE, XRD, IR, SEM and solid state 29Si- and 27Al-NMR. Particular emphasis was put on the advantage to use in combination high resolution ...

Aquaporins (AQPs) are channel proteins that facilitate and regulate the permeation of water across biological membranes. Black Mexican sweet suspension cultured cells are a convenient model for studying the regulation of maize AQP expression and activity. Among other advantages, a single cell system allows the contribution of plasma membrane AQPs (PIPs, plasma membrane intrinsic proteins) to the membrane water permeability coefficient (Pf) to be determined using biophysical measurement methods, such ...

This article reports the process of building a balanced text corpus taking into account prosodic features. We formalize the application of greedy algorithms for text selection and we discuss their limitations. We also defend an expert guideline for text manipulation that significantly improves the performance of the algorithms. The application of this methodology to a radio news corpus empirically supports the proposed strategy.

Nutcracker syndrome includes all the symptoms associated with the narrowing of the left renal vein (LRV). That narrowing occurs between the aorta and the Superior Mesenteric Artery (anterior) or vertebra (posterior). The symptoms are various and not specific but the patient sometimes presents hematuria with or without left flank pain. We report a case on a 42 years old woman, who was suffering from left flank pain for a long time aggravated during and after each pregnancy. The diagnosis of nutcracker ...

Morel-Lavallée lesions are traumatic abnormalities characterized by the accumulation of hemolymphatic fluid collection following disruption of subcutaneous fat tissue from the underlying deep fascia. Here, we present the case of a 63-year-old woman with a prepatellar Morel-Lavallée lesion, an unusual location for this pathology initially misdiagnosed as prepatellar bursitis. An MRI was performed allowing the correction of the diagnosis, highlighting the essential role of imaging in confirming the ...

Spreadsheet programs for interactive surfaces have limited manipulations capabilities and are often frustrating to use. One key reason is that the spreadsheet grid creates a layer that intercepts most user input events, making it difficult to reach the cell values that lie underneath. We conduct an analysis of commercial spreadsheet programs and an elicitation study to understand what users can do and what they would like to do with spreadsheets on interactive surfaces. Informed by these, we design ...

Objective Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare condition whose clinical presentation can range from simple headaches to severe impairment of alertness. Some clinical forms, such as involvement of the deep venous system, are associated with a poorer clinical prognosis despite well-managed anticoagulation. The role and timing of rescue mechanical thrombectomy for these patients is not well established. Method Clinical and imaging follow-up are discussed according to our treatment decision. Results ...
