Infection by Wolbachia was described previously in eleven species of Anastrepha fruit flies some of which are important pests of fruticulture. One such species is the nominal Anastrepha fraterculus, the South American fruit fly, which actually comprises a complex of cryptic species. The suggestions of using Wolbachia for the control of these pest species, make imperative a more precise characterization of the existing strains of the bacteria. In this study, population samples of the A. fraterculus ...

Infection with Trypanosoma cruzi decreases the ability of spleen cells from mice to respond to either T cell, concanavalin A (Con A), or B cell, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), mitogens. The effect of infection on the mitogenic response depends on the elapsed time between the day of infection and the time of mitogen presentation. Responses early in infection are normal, whereas later responses to either mitogen are depressed. Spleen cells from late trypanosome-infected mice inhibit the ability of normal ...

The effect of an extract (CE) obtained from Cysticercus cellulosae on the proliferation of lymphocytes was studied in cultures of murine spleen cells. The addition of CE to the cultures resulted in the highly significant uptake and incorporation of tritiated thymidine (3H-TdR) into DNA. This phenomena was dose-dependent, with doses lower and higher than the optimal concentration causing less marked effects. The kinetic peak of this response was found to occur on day 2 of culture. CE evoked a proliferative ...

Methods Retrospective analyses of patients with salivary gland carcinoma of the oral cavity or oropharynx, treated in 1989 to 2006. Statistics included univariate analyses to identify prognostic factors associated with disease‐free survival (DFS) and disease‐specific survival. A multivariate analysis model was constructed by the Cox method. Results ...

A novel method of synthesis consisting of the production of ordered arrangements of tubular pores distributed inside SnO2 annealed thin films, which are prepared from a rotating disk process carried out at 2000−3500 rpm, is herein described. The main novelty is that no surfactant molecules are required in order to create these ordered pore structures; the templating entities are supramolecular assemblies of oligomeric chains formed during the extra-long aging allowed to the sol−gel processing of ...

Synthesis of nanoporous SnO2 by a surfactant self-assembling sol–gel technique is described in this work. The synthesis was performed at room temperature by employing tin(IV) tetra-tert-amyloxide, Sn (OAmt)4, as the porous SnO2 frame precursor in the presence of the micelles of a cationic surfactant solution of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which, in turn, acts as the SnO2 particle nanostructure director. The pH of the Sn alkoxide–CTAB mixture was adjusted to a value of 2 with HCl in order ...

Here we have addressed the role of this glycosylation pattern in the functional properties of two glycoproteins involved in the processes of cancer cell invasion and migration, α2β1 integrin, the main receptor for type 1 collagen, ...

Our objective was to identify cancer-related glycan epitopes on MUC1 and MUC5AC mucins in PDAC as potential biomarkers. There are some aggravating features, such as immunosuppression, that can cause the nasal mucosal inflammation to linger for a long period, resulting in chronic or recurrent episodes.
