ABSTRACT Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is a step-by-step approach for identifying all possible failures in a design, a manufacturing or assembly process, or a product or service. The purpose of the FMEA is to take actions to eliminate or reduce failures, starting with the highest-priority ones. This article presents a basis for prioritizing the healthcare problems using FMEA with linguistic variables and fuzzy if–then rules. Severity rating of healthcare problems is handled under the ...

We conducted a study to evaluate the interactive effect of NO and H2 S on the cadmium (Cd) tolerance of wheat. Cadmium stress considerably reduced total dry weight, chlorophyll a and b content and ratio of Fv/Fm by 36.7, 48.6, 26.7 and 19.5%, respectively, but significantly enhanced the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) and malondialdehyde (MDA), endogenous H2 S and NO, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Exogenously applied sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), donors of ...

Brassinosteroids (BRs) have been rarely tested for their effective roles in mitigation of deleterious effects of water stress (WS) on plants. In addition, the contribution of nitric oxide (NO) in BR-improved plant tolerance to water stress needs to be elucidated. So, a trial was carried out to uncover the contribution of NO in BR-induced tolerance of pepper plants to WS. For well-watered and water-stressed plants, soil water availability was sustained at 80% and 40% of the full water storage capacity, ...

AbstractThe main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of thickness-gradient patterns on energy absorption characteristics of aluminium-based circular tubes under axial impact loading. Functionally graded thickness (FGT) enables to obtain variable stiffness throughout the length of a structure; thus, it provides more efficient control of the crashworthiness parameters when compared with traditionally designed uniform thickness (UT) counterparts. In order to investigate the crash behaviour ...

ABSTRACT The effect of silicon (Si) on physiological attributes and nutritional status of maize (Zea mays cv. DK 647 F1) under water stress was studied in a pot experiment. Treatments were (1) well watered (WW): 100% of FC (soil field capacity), (2) WW + Si1: 100% of FC + 1 mM Si, (3) WW + Si2: 100% of FC + 2 mM Si, (4) water stress (WS): 50% of FC, (5) WS + Si1: 50% of FC + 1 mM Si and (6) WS + Si2: 50% of FC + 2 mM Si. In the control treatment, plants were irrigated to field capacity (100% FC). Water stress was imposed by ...

The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of functionally graded thickness (FGT) patterns and cross-sectional shapes (i.e. circular, square and hexagonal) on crashworthiness performance of thin-walled tubes under multiple impact loading angles (0°–30°) by using the nonlinear explicit finite-element (FE) method. In order to show the efficiency of FGT tubes under different impact loading angles, the crashworthiness performances of the FGT tubes are also compared with their uniform ...

Ordinary stone columns and Geosynthetic Encased Stone columns are used in remediation of soft soils with low bearing capacities. Primary objective of granular columns is to provide structural support to the overlying foundation layers. Given that the granular columns implemented in soft soil conditions support a large portion of the surcharge pressure, developing an understanding of settlement response and pressure bearing characteristics of granular columns under seismic loading conditions is of ...

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the applicability of investment decision‐making techniques under fuzziness. Design/methodology/approach The paper explains how fuzzy sets can be used in investment decision making. Findings It was found that any classical investment analysis technique can be converted easily to a fuzzy case. Originality/value The paper indicates the necessity for usage of the fuzzy set theory in case of incomplete information.

Plant hormones can be defi ned as organic substances that are produced in one part of plant and translocated to another parts, where at very low concentration, They stimulate physiological response. Plant hormones are natural products and when they are synthesized chemically they are called plant growth regulators. Plants are usually subjected to environmental factors such as drought or high soil and water salinity. The reduction in plant growth exposed to saline environments could be due to either ...

Axiomatic design gives a design map to designers in order to establish a scientific basis, which improves design activities. In the classical axiomatic design (AD) approach, the relationships between functional requirements (FRs) and design parameters (DPs) are defined in crisp numbers notably “0” or “1”. This definition restricts relevant designers due to the incomplete information or uncertainty in various circumstances. This study debates the adaptation of the current AD principles into fuzzy sets ...

Abstract Salinity limits crop production in large areas of the world. The application of in vitro Photosystem II (PS‐II) activity measurements to screen hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.) genotypes for NaCl tolerance has been investigated by comparing their responses under stress and control (no added NaCl) conditions. One of the four cultivars used in the study was ‘Kharchia’ known for its high salt tolerance. Wheat seedlings were grown hydroponically in environmental chambers and treated with ...
