The presence of Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas) in the coastal waters of the Netherlands and in the southern North Sea is discussed. The species is absent from the Wadden Sea and all Dutch estuaries, but is common in the southern North Sea off the southern part of the Netherlands and off Belgium. In some other parts of the southern North Sea with very similar conditions of grain size, temperature and salinity, it is absent. The occurrence of Branchiostoma is related to the presence of the so-called “ ...

The distribution and ecology of the lancelet Branchiostoma platae (Hubbs, 1922) in the Ilha Grande (RJ) region are studied. Hydrological differences between the two regions of Ilha Grande (RJ) are reinforced by the distribution of this species. Its largest density reaches 717 individuals/m2. Most of the occurrences was in coarse sand bottoms. Positive correlation between water mass, currents and the occurrence of the species is suggested. There is a positive correlation between the lenght mean/station ...

Abstract Reissner's fibre (RF) is an extraordinary ancient feature of the chordate central nervous system. In vertebrates the RF material is released by the cells of the subcommissural organ (SCO) situated in the roof of the brain. In cephalochordates the RF forming apparatus is the infundibular organ (IFO), a structure in the floor of the brain vesicle. Both the SCO and the IFO are areas of specialized secretory ependymal cells. Recently the SCO‐secretion of many vertebrate species has been studied ...

The spermatozoon of Branchiostoma moretonensis closely resembles that of B. lanceolatum and, though near the primitive sperm, allows recognition of a cephalochordate sperm type. This has: a bell‐shaped acrosome; diffuse subacrosomal material not structured as an acrosome rod; sub‐ovoidal nucleus with shallow anterior concavity, deep tubular posterior fossa (endonuclear canal) and condensed but lacunate chromatin; single asymmetrical, postnuclear mitochondrion almost completely or completely encircling ...

The asymmetrical endostyle of Branchiostoma larvae contains two different zones of mucus-producing cells which metamorphose to the paired zones 2 and 4 respectively in the endostyle of the adult. In both the larva and the adult these zones are parts of the food-trapping mechanism. An endostyle zone, which has a position corresponding to that of the paired iodinating zones in the endostyle of the adult, binds iodine selectively. The ultrastructure and labeling pattern indicate that the labeled cells ...

Abstract Three ontogenetically related coeloms of a lancelet are described by transmission electron microscopy. The fin box coeloms are lined dorsally and laterally by smooth myomesothelial cells of uncertain function. In contrast, there are no myofilaments in the mesothelial cells of the ventral parts of the fin boxes. Similarly, myofilaments are absent from the mesothelia lining all parts of the sclerocoels and the lateral parts of the myocoels (the medial side of the myocoel is a myomesothelium ...
