Abstract Background Leptospira are shed into the environment via urine of infected animals. Rivers are thought to be an important risk factor for transmission to humans, though much is unknown about the types of environment or characteristics that favor survival. To address this, we screened for Leptospira DNA in two rivers in rural Ecuador where Leptospirosis is endemic. Results We collected 112 longitudinal samples and recorded pH, temperature, river depth, precipitation, and dissolved oxygen. ...

The purpose of this study was to compare the stress distributions in the teeth treated through minimally invasive access (MIA) designs to those of the teeth treated through traditional straight-line access and their relationship to the final restoration using three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA).Four FEA models of an extracted mandibular first molar were constructed. An intact model served as the control, whereas the other three were prepared with either an MIA or traditional straight-line ...

Two integral abutment bridges in Vermont, USA were instrumented and monitored to report behavior under seasonal thermal load. This paper describes substructure response from 30 months of field data. The bridges are single span steel girder bridges of approximately 40 m on pile foundations. One bridge is straight while the other has a 15° skew. Variations in substructure displacements, backfill pressures and pile moments are reported under hot, cold and moderate ambient temperatures. Abutment and ...

Previous analyses of the history of Phanerozoic marine biodiversity suggested that the post-Paleozoic increase observed at the family level and below was caused, in part, by an increase in global provinciality associated with the breakup of Pangea. Efforts to characterize the Phanerozoic history of provinciality, however, have been compromised by interval-to-interval variations in the methods and standards used by researchers to calibrate the number of provinces. With the development of comprehensive, ...

It has previously been thought that there was a steep Cretaceous and Cenozoic radiation of marine invertebrates. This pattern can be replicated with a new data set of fossil occurrences representing 3.5 million specimens, but only when older analytical protocols are used. Moreover, analyses that employ sampling standardization and more robust counting methods show a modest rise in diversity with no clear trend after the mid-Cretaceous. Globally, locally, and at both high and low latitudes, diversity ...

Anthropogenic alteration is a persistent and growing problem in coastal marine ecosystems. Changes may have occurred and gone undetected in coastal systems, and analysis of the molluscan death assemblage provides a useful tool for detecting changes where long-term observational monitoring of living organisms has not been conducted.During the early 1980s, a series of experiments were conducted along Cross Bank, Florida Bay (inside Everglades National Park) to assess the effects of nutrient pollution ...

Molluscan death assemblages in coastal marine settings are compositionally dynamic in time and space. Here, we describe a significant temporal faunal transition recorded over some two decades in the upper sedimentary veneer of a currently accumulating shell bed in Smuggler's Cove, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. It had been demonstrated previously that molluscan death assemblages in the study area reflect the living assemblages from which they were derived. Further, a gradient among these assemblages ...

Load testing of two instrumented single-span integral abutment bridges (IABs) in Vermont, US, was conducted using loaded multiple tandem dump trucks. Data was used to validate finite element (FE) models of each structure. Field data and FE model results were compared to gain an understanding of the distribution of live load on completed integral bridges and resulting stresses and deformations in structural components. The superstructure of the two bridges consists of a concrete deck supported on steel ...
