Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a rare tumor, which affects 1/100 000 individuals, but it represents 30% of central nervous system malignancies. GBM is a severe tumor responsible for 2% of all cancer-related deaths. Although characterized by genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneities, GBM invariably resists conventional chemo- and radiotherapies. Several chromosome alterations and gene mutations were detected in GBM. Simian virus 40 (SV40), a small DNA tumor virus, has been found in GBM specimens by ...

Rabies virus antigen-specific human monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that recognized either viral glycoprotein, ribonucleoprotein, or matrix proteins were generated. Only glycoprotein-specific MAb neutralized a variety of rabies viruses and protected laboratory rodents against lethal rabies virus infection. The determinant recognized by this MAb does not appear to reside in previously defined antigenic sites of the viral glycoprotein.

BACKGROUND A multi‐institutional nomogram for predicting disease‐free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with primary retroperitoneal sarcoma (RPS) incorporating relevant prognostic factors not included in the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system for soft tissue sarcoma has been reported. The authors validated this nomogram with an independent, transatlantic cohort. METHODS Data from patients with RPS who were undergoing definitive resection at 1 of 6 sarcoma centers ...

Simian virus 40 (SV40) large T antigen ( LT ) coding sequences were revealed in different human samples, whereas SV40 antibodies (Ab) were detected in human sera of cancer patients and healthy individuals, although with a lower prevalence. Previous studies carried out by the neutralization assay gave a SV40 seroprevalence, in the general population, up to 8%, although higher rates, 12%, were detected in kidney transplant children, in a group of HIV-positive patients, and in healthy females. In this study, ...

Soil erosion is generally recognized as the dominant process of land degradation. The formation and expansion of gullies is often a highly significant process of soil erosion. However, our ability to assess and simulate gully erosion and its impacts remains very limited. This is especially so at regional to continental scales. As a result, gullying is often overlooked in policies and land and catchment management strategies. Nevertheless, significant progress has been made over the past decades. ...

Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE) is a multisystemic autosomal recessive disease due to primary thymidine phosphorylase (TP) deficiency. To restore TP activity, we performed reduced intensity allogeneic stem cell transplantations (alloSCTs) in two patients. In the first, alloSCT failed to engraft, but the second achieved mixed donor chimerism, which partially restored buffy coat TP activity and lowered plasma nucleosides. Thus, alloSCT can correct biochemical abnormalities ...
