To begin to characterize biochemically the transcriptional activation systems in photosynthetic bacteria, theRhodobacter capsulatus RNA polymerase (RNAP) that contains the ς70 factor (R. capsulatusRNAP/ς70) was purified and characterized using two classical ς70 type promoters, the bacteriophage T7A1 and the RNA I promoters. Transcription from these promoters was sensitive to rifampicin, RNase, and monoclonal antibody 2G10 (directed against the Escherichia coli ς70 subunit). Specific transcripts were ...

A number of hearing-impaired individuals with near-normal thresholds for frequencies above 8 000 Hz who are characterized by good speech articulation have recently been identified. It is unclear whether this unusually good articulation is linked to the ability of such persons to process speech signals containing energy that falls within the range of their residual, high-frequency hearing (for example, certain consonants). This paper reports a detailed study of the signal-processing capabilities of ...

Overdiagnosis and overtreatment of prostate cancer (CaP) is attributable to widespread reliance on PSA screening in the US.This has prompted us and others to search for improved biomarkers for CaP, to facilitate early detection and disease stratification. In this regard, autoantibodies (AAbs) against tumor antigens could serve as potential candidates for diagnosis and prognosis of CaP.Towards this, our goals were: i) To investigate whether AAbs against ERG oncoprotein (overexpressed in 25-50% of Caucasian ...

Bilateral vestibular deficiency (BVD) due to gentamicin ototoxicity can significantly impact quality of life and result in large socioeconomic burdens. Restoring sensation of head rotation using an implantable multichannel vestibular prosthesis (MVP) is a promising treatment approach that has been tested in animals and humans. However, uncertainty remains regarding the histopathologic effects of gentamicin ototoxicity alone or in combination with electrode implantation. Understanding these histological ...

By sensing three-dimensional (3D) head rotation and electrically stimulating the three ampullary branches of a vestibular nerve to encode head angular velocity, a multichannel vestibular prosthesis (MVP) can restore vestibular sensation to individuals disabled by loss of vestibular hair cell function. However, current spread to afferent fibers innervating non-targeted canals and otolith end organs can distort the vestibular nerve activation pattern, causing misalignment between the perceived and actual ...

Abstract Engagement of endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) by activated protein C (aPC) decreases expression of endothelial adhesion molecules implicated in tumor-endothelium interactions. We examined the role of the aPC/EPCR pathway on tumor migration and metastasis. In vitro, B16-F10 melanoma cells showed decreased adhesion to and transmigration through endothelium treated with recombinant human aPC (rhaPC). In murine B16-F10 metastasis models, transgenic EPCR overexpressing (Tie2-EPCR) mice exhibited ...

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of soluble dietary fibre inclusion on milk coagulation kinetics. Three fibre ingredients gum acacia, inulin or pectin were added to milk prior to addition of rennet. Milk coagulation was monitored using a controlled stress rheometer, NIR transmission sensor and a hot wire sensor. Gel times and coagulum firming rates were determined from the sensor response characteristics. Gel microstructure was examined using confocal scanning laser microscopy. ...

Competing rhyming pairs of both natural and synthetic speech were presented both monotically and dichotically to normal right-handed listeners. When the onsets of the words were simultaneous (±2½ msecs), the right ear scores were generally higher than the left ear scores. However, voiceless consonants were much more intelligible dichotically than voiced consonants, regardless of which ear received the voiceless consonant. When both consonants competed monotically, the difference between voiced and ...

Summary Follow up data have been presented on 424 patients with carcinoma of the rectum or rectosigmoid, or both, who underwent one-stage low-anterior resection. A total of 27 patients died in the immediate postoperative period, giving a hospital mortality of 6.4 per cent. Hospitalization of the remaining 397 patients averaged 19.4 days, and if 128 patients with postoperative complications are excluded, hospitalization of the remaining 269 patients averaged 14.3 days.
