Neurophysiological studies have demonstrated multisensory interaction effects in the neural structures involved in saccade generation when visual, auditory or somatosensory stimuli are presented bimodally. Visual–auditory interaction effects have been demonstrated in numerous behavioural studies of saccades but little is known about interaction effects involving somatosensory stimuli. The present study examined visual–somatosensory interaction effects on saccade generation using a multisensory paradigm, ...

A proposal has been developed by the Agricultural Chemical Safety Assessment (ACSA) Technical Committee of the ILSI Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI) for an improved approach to assessing the safety of crop protection chemicals. The goal is to ensure that studies are scientifically appropriate and necessary without being redundant, and that tests emphasize toxicological endpoints and exposure durations that are relevant for risk assessment. Incorporation of pharmacokinetic studies ...

Recent research on multisensory perception suggests a number of general principles for crossmodal integration and that the standard model in the field--feedforward convergence of information--must be modified to include a role for feedback projections from multimodal to unimodal brain areas.

Jon Driver, Charles Spence,

Most selective attention research has considered only a single sensory modality at a time, but in the real world, our attention must be coordinated crossmodally. Recent studies reveal extensive crossmodal links in attention across the various modalities (i.e. audition, vision, touch and proprioception). Attention typically shifts to a common location across the modalities, despite the vast differences in their initial coding of space. These spatial synergies in attention can be maintained even when ...

Jon Driver, Charles Spence,

A great deal is now known about the effects of spatial attention within individual sensory modalities, especially for vision and audition. However, there has been little previous study of possible crossmodal links in attention. Here, we review recent findings from our own experiments on this topic, which reveal extensive spatial links between the modalities. An irrelevant but salient event presented within touch, audition, or vision, can attract covert spatial attention in the other modalities (with ...

Oral cotreatment of mice with ethanol results in increased tumors in extrahepatic organs caused by some nitrosamines. This action, attributed in part to inhibition of hepatic first-pass carcinogen metabolism by ethanol, has possible relevance to the enhancing effect of alcoholic beverage consumption on human cancer risk. In this study, the effects of ethanol on clearance of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) were quantified in Swiss female and strain A male mice. In Swiss mice, a 1.6 g/kg ig ethanol dose ...

All subjects were free of a neurodegenerative diagnosis at baseline and had annual motor, general neurological, and neuropsychological assessments. Subjects with ET were compared with controls for the risk of dementia. There were 83 subjects with ET and 424 subjects without tremor. Mean age at study entry was 80 ± 5.9 for ET and 76 ± 8.5 for controls. ...

We have developed a hazard perception test (HPT) that presents short video scenes to observers and requires them to identify a traffic conflict that could lead to a collision between the ‘camera’ vehicle and another road user. In the present study, we compared the performance of young, experienced drivers (M = 21.30 years of age) with that of healthy, older drivers (M = 70.88 years of age). Although an average hazard perception test score based on all scenes did not produce systematic age effects, older ...
