Accumulated evidence suggests that neuropeptide Y (NPY) is involved in emotional disorders by acting on Y1 and Y2 receptors. This hypothesis is based on animal studies carried out in naïve normal animals but not in animal models of depression, including the olfactory bulbectomized (OBX) rat. The OBX rat produces a wide array of symptoms that mimic several aspects of human depression and anxiety disorders. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of sustained (2 weeks) intracerebroventricular ...

The prognosis of peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is highly dependent on the extent of the PC. This extent is calculated by the peritoneal cancer index (PCI). In the future, the indications for complete cytoreductive surgery (CRS) + hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) should be partially based on the PCI. This raises the question of the concordance between the PCI scores calculated by different surgeons, and a possible variation before and after CRS.To analyze variations in the PCI score between ...

β-Carrageenan, essentially devoid of ester sulfate, was isolated from the hot aqueous extracts of alkali-modified Eucheuma gelatinae, Eucheuma speciosa, and Endocladia muricatum by precipitating the more anionic moieties with a quaternary ammonium salt, isolating the fractions that did not precipitate, then treating these with an anion-exchange cellulose. The β-carrageenan was characterized by chemical analysis, optical rotation, and NMR. Gelling was found to be ion-independent, with Tg = 31–33°C ...

To identify genomic regions affected by the rapid fixation of beneficial mutations (selective sweeps), we performed a scan of microsatellite variability across the Notch locus region of Drosophila melanogaster. Nine microsatellites spanning 60 kb of the X chromosome were surveyed for variation in one African and three non-African populations of this species. The microsatellites identified an approximately 14-kb window for which we observed relatively low levels of variability and/or a skew in the ...

In 2002 Kim and Stephan proposed a promising composite-likelihood method for localizing and estimating the fitness advantage of a recently fixed beneficial mutation. Here, we demonstrate that their composite-likelihood-ratio (CLR) test comparing selective and neutral hypotheses is not robust to undetected population structure or a recent bottleneck, with some parameter combinations resulting in a false positive rate of nearly 90%. We also propose a goodness-of-fit test for discriminating rejections ...

Abstract. This paper describes in situ meteorological forcing and evaluation data, and bias-corrected reanalysis forcing data, for cold regions' modelling at 10 sites. The long-term datasets (one maritime, one arctic, three boreal, and five mid-latitude alpine) are the reference sites chosen for evaluating models participating in the Earth System Model-Snow Model Intercomparison Project. Periods covered by the in situ data vary between 7 and 20 years of hourly meteorological data, with evaluation ...

The package combining complete cytoreductive surgery (CCRS) (treating the visible disease) plus hyperthermic intraoperative peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) (treating the remaining non-visible disease) achieves cure in many patients. Non-invasive, quantitative methods to assess the properties of biological tissues are needed for many therapeutic and tissue engineering applications. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) has historically relied on external vibration to generate periodic shear waves. In order to focally assess a biomaterial or to monitor the response to ablative therapy, the interrogation of a specific region of interest by a focused beam is desirable and transient MRE (t-MRE) techniques have previously been developed ...
