Despite similar exposure to pituitary gonadotropins by perfusion of both ovaries with the same peripheral blood, only 1 of the 2 ovaries sponsors the single dominant follicle in the typical menstrual cycle. In the present study we examined the initiation of asymmetrical ovarian function during recruitment and selection of the dominant follicle in the primate ovarian cycle by comparison of steroid hormones in the ovarian venous effluent. Thirty-four adult female rhesus monkeys were selected because ...

Renal insufficiency is known to increase plasma fluoride levels, which may increase the risk of fluorosis and osteomalacia. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of fluoride on skeletal fragility and mineralization in renal-deficient animals. We evaluated the skeleton of rats with surgically induced renal deficiency (45 nephrectomy) that were chronically exposed to fluoridated water at concentrations of 0, 5, 15, and 50 ppm for a period of 6 months. The chosen fluoride doses caused ...

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) can lead to devastating outcomes including vasospasm, cognitive decline, and even death. Currently, treatment options are limited for this potentially life threatening injury. Recent evidence suggests that neuroinflammation plays a critical role in injury expansion and brain damage. Red blood cell breakdown products can lead to the release of inflammatory cytokines that trigger vasospasm and tissue injury. Preclinical models have been used successfully to ...

An association between migratory pulmonary infiltrates and peripheral eosinophilia has been known for at least 40 years. Diagnostic challenges still exist in the classifications within this syndrome. We describe a 33-year-old female without asthma but with definite "atopy" who had a 4-year history of recurring pulmonary lesions. These were sometimes segmental, at other times dense and peripheral, and once there was lobar atelectasis due to mucoid impaction. Diagnosis by lung biopsy revealed eosinophilic ...

The phase composition and microphysical structure of clouds define the manner in which they modulate atmospheric radiation and contribute to the hydrologic cycle. Issues regarding cloud phase partitioning and transformation come to bear directly in mixed-phase clouds, and have been difficult to address within current modeling frameworks. Ground-based, remote-sensing observations of mixed-phase clouds can contribute a significant body of knowledge with which to better understand, and thereby more ...

We report on six cases of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning following consumption of mussels harvested in the United Kingdom. Dinophysis spp. in the water column was found to have increased rapidly at the production site resulting in high levels of okadaic acid-group lipophilic toxins in the flesh of consumed mussels. Clinicians and public health professionals should remain aware of algal-derived toxins being a potential cause of illness following seafood consumption.

Describing essential habitat is an important step toward understanding and conserving harvested species in ecosystem-based fishery management. Using data from fishery-independent ichthyoplankton, groundfish surveys, and commercial fisheries observer data, we utilized species distribution modeling techniques to predict habitat-based spatial distributions of federally managed species in Alaska. The distribution and abundance maps were used to refine existing essential fish habitat descriptions for ...

Abstract Background Patients undergoing amputation of the lower extremity for the complications of peripheral artery disease and/or diabetes are at risk of treatment failure and the need for reamputation at a higher level. The aim of this study was to develop a patient-specific reamputation risk prediction model. Abstract Natural history collections (NHCs) are the foundation of historical baselines for assessing anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity. Along these lines, the online mobilization of specimens via digitization—the conversion of specimen data into accessible digital content—has greatly expanded the use of NHC collections across a diversity of disciplines. We broaden the current vision of digitization (Digitization 1.0)—whereby specimens are digitized within NHCs—to include new approaches that rely ...
