We used radio telemetry to evaluate activity area size, habitat use, diurnal activity, and the influence of weather, environmental temperatures and sex on daily movements in 18 Sternotherus odoratus in southwestern Michigan. Turtles mainly moved within the highly vegetated littoral zone but two individuals used wet meadow areas adjacent to the lake and an adjoining stream. Activity area size, as measured by the 95% fixed kernel method using 40 radio telemetry days per individual, did not vary between ...

Abstract Experimental results of the mean flow field and turbulence characteristics for flow in a model channel bend with a mobile sand bed are presented. Acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADVs) were used to measure the three components of instantaneous velocities at multiple cross sections in a 135° channel bend for two separate experiments at different stages of clear water scour conditions. With measurements at multiple cross sections through the bend it was possible to map the changes in both the ...

Flow within an alluvial channel bend is significantly affected by channel geometry, including curvature ratio (bend radius/channel width, R/B) and aspect ratio (channel width/flow depth, B/H). High curvature bends (R/B≤3) can experience substantially more erosion than milder curvature bends. This study employs a three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model to investigate the effects of curvature ratio and aspect ratio on bend flow with respect to a high curvature (R/B=1.5) base case ...

Objective The study aims to evaluate the differences in ovarian cancer survival by age and stage at diagnosis within and across seven high-income countries. Methods We analyzed data from 58,161 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer during 2010–2014, followed until 31 December 2015, from 21 population-based cancer registries in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, and United Kingdom. Absorption and emission spectra of all-trans 1, 3, 5, 7-octatetraene are presented along with fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. In solution, a gap of about 3000 cm−1 is found between the first band of the 1 1Ag→11Bu transition and the onset of the emission spectrum. Excitation spectra of concentrated solutions at 77 K show low-lying bands in this gap, the lowest energy band being almost coincident with the highest energy fluorescence band. On the other hand, gas phase fluorescence spectra ...

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has increased sensitivity in detection of nonenhancing brain tumors and may show the extent of CNS neoplasia with greater detail than CT. Magnetic resonance images of the canine brain were acquired in two dogs with diffuse leptomeningeal and cerebral low grade astrocytoma. Abnormalities were identified with MR imaging when CT and CSF analysis were noncontributory. Changes seen with MR included decreased signal on T1-weighted images and increased signal on T2-weighted ...

Abstract Acanthosis nigricans has been associated with multiple endocrinopathies. The common denominator appears to be insulin resistance. Three patients are described (one woman and two men) who presented with hypothyroidism and acanthosis nigricans. All the patients had elevated insulin levels in the fasting state and in response to an oral glucose load. The mechanism for the resistance to insulin was a post-receptor binding defect or a structural abnormality in circulating insulin, since glucose tolerance ...

The synthesis of cis-1-ethyl-1,3,4,9-tetrahydro-4-(phenylmethyl)pyrano[3,4-b]indole -1-acetic acid, pemedolac (USAN), is described. This compound has been found to be a potent analgesic agent in primary screening. Pemedolac has been resolved and the active (+)-enantiomer assigned a 1S,4R absolute configuration on the basis of a crystallographic analysis of its (S)-(-)-borneol ester.

Extreme climatic events are key factors in initiating gradual or sudden changes in forest ecosystems through the promotion of severe, tree‐killing disturbances such as fire, blowdown, and widespread insect outbreaks. In contrast to these climatically‐incited disturbances, little is known about the more direct effect of drought on tree mortality, especially in high‐elevation forests. Therefore projections of drought‐induced mortality under future climatic conditions remain uncertain. For a subalpine ...

Ajay Rawal, Patrick J. Gavin, Charles D. Sturgis,

The incidence of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection has progressively increased in North America since the first epidemic in 1999. Formal scholarly documentation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology changes in patients with WNV infection is limited. We report our experience with CSF cytospins from a population of consecutive patients with documented CSF WNV-specific IgM. Thirty-two patients (12 male, 20 female) with a median age of 52 yr (range, 19-88) diagnosed with WNV meningo-encephalitis were studied. ...
