Hongbo Zhu, Marina Brodsky, Amy Gorman, Charles E. Inturrisi,

The steady-state mRNA levels of the NMDA receptor NR1 subunit were determined by a quantitative solution hybridization assay in selected CNS regions associated with antinociception in the rat. Tissues were obtained by microdissection from rats treated chronically with morphine alone or in combination with LY274614, a competitive NMDA receptor antagonist. Morphine treatment for 7 days resulted in the development of tolerance to morphine's analgesic effect and produced a significant decrease in the ...

Additional neurological features have recently been described in seven families transmitting pathogenic mutations in OPA1, the most common cause of autosomal dominant optic atrophy. However, the frequency of these syndromal ‘dominant optic atrophy plus’ variants and the extent of neurological involvement have not been established. In this large multi-centre study of 104 patients from 45 independent families, including 60 new cases, we show that extra-ocular neurological complications are common in ...

There is increasing evidence for an important role of adverse early experience on the development of major psychiatric disorders in adulthood. Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), an endogenous neuropeptide, is the primary physiological regulator of the mammalian stress response. Grown nonhuman primates who were exposed as infants to adverse early rearing conditions were studied to determine if long-term alterations of CRF neuronal systems had occurred following the early stressor. In comparison ...

A reduction of the growth hormone (GH) response to the α2 adrenergic agonist clonidine is a neuroendocrine abnormality observed with reasonable consistency among human patients with mood and anxiety disorders. Children exposed to early life stress (ELS) exhibit enlarged amygdala volume in comparison to controls. The primary goal of this study was to examine amygdala volumes in bonnet macaques subjected to maternal variable foraging demand (VFD) rearing, a well-established model of ELS. Preliminary analyses examined the interaction of ELS and the serotonin transporter gene on amygdala volume. Secondary analyses were conducted to examine the association between amygdala volume and other stress-related variables ...

Simulations of building energy use can give insights into how energy efficiency retrofits and operational changes can influence a building's total and temporal energy use. However, before those models are used to generate recommendations, it is important to understand how accurately the simulations predict actual energy use. This paper seeks to determine model accuracy by considering 54 homes in Austin, TX that are part of a smart grid demonstration project. Data about the homes were collected with ...

Glutaric acidemia type II is associated with neonatal hypoketotic hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis, profound hypotonia, progressive cardiomyopathy, and early death. Deficiency of either electron transfer flavoprotein or electron transport flavoprotein: ubiquinone oxidoreductase leads to intramitochondrial accumulation of metabolites of compounds oxidized by enzymes that transfer electrons to flavoprotein. No detailed results of antemortem neuroimaging or magnetic resonance spectroscopy have been ...

Background:In an earlier study, infant primates were nursed by mothers randomly assigned to variable foraging demand (VFD) or nonvariable foraging conditions (non-VFD).A group of grown VFD-reared subjects demonstrated elevations of cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) corticotropin-releasing factor concentrations and decreased CSF cortisol levels vs non-VFD counterparts. To further characterize neurobiological sequelae of disturbed early rearing, CSF concentrations of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine ...
