If classical physics be regarded as comprising gravitation, source free electromagnetism, unquantized charge, and unquantized mass of concentrations of electromagnetic field energy (geons), then classical physics can be described in terms of curved empty space, and nothing more. No changes are made in existing theory. The electromagnetic field is given by the Maxwell square root of the contracted curvature tensor of Ricci and Einstein. Maxwell's equations then reduce, as shown thirty years ago by ...

Fermi coordinates, where the metric is rectangular and has vanishing first derivatives at each point of a curve, are constructed in a particular way about a geodesic. This determines an expansion of the metric in powers of proper distance normal to the geodesic, of which the second-order terms are explicitly computed here in terms of the curvature tensor at the corresponding point on the base geodesic. These terms determine the lowest-order effects of a gravitational field which can be measured ...

The ``generalized Schwarzschild'' metric discovered by Newman, Unti, and Tamburino, which is stationary and spherically symmetric, is investigated. We find that the orbit of a point under the group of time translations is a circle, rather than a line as in the Schwarzschild case. The time-like hypersurfaces r = const which are left invariant by the group of motions are topologically three-spheres S3, in contrast to the topology S2 × R (or S2 × S1) for the r = const surfaces in the Schwarzschild case. In the ...

It is shown that one of the family of "generalized energy density" definitions being investigated by Komar, one for which the generalized energy density is made positive definite by use of minimal surfaces, leads to a total "generalized energy" which (a) is undefinable for closed universes, (b) is not conserved for some asymptotically flat spaces, and (c) is not the correct total energy for the Oppenheimer-Snyder collapsing star metric where the metric in a neighborhood of infinity is identically the ...

The energy of the gravitational field is shown to be positive-definite for the case where initially (a) the spatial metric gij can be made isotropic and (b) the second fundamental form Kij ≡ − (−g00)−12Γ0ij (which is essentially ∂gij∂t) is arbitrary apart from the coordinate condition K ≡ Kij3gij = 0 defining the initial t = const. surface. Physically, this situation corresponds to no wave excitations initially in gij, but arbitrary ones in Kij. More precisely, the two canonical coordinates of the field are initially ...

The solutions of the Einstein field equations, previously used in deriving the self-energy of a point charge, are shown to be nonsingular in a canonical frame, except at the position of the particle. A distribution of "dust" of finite extension is examined as the model whose limit is the point particle. The standard "proper rest-mass density" is related to the bare rest-mass density. The lack of singularity of the initial metric ${g}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}$ is in contrast to the Schwarzschild ...

The general theory of relativity is cast into normal Hamiltonian form in terms of two pairs of independent conjugate field variables. These variables are explicitly exhibited and obey ordinary Poisson bracket relations. This form is reached by imposing a simple set of coordinate conditions. It is shown that those functionals of the metric used as invariant coordinates do not appear explicitly in the Hamiltonian and momentum densities, so that the standard differential conservation laws hold. The ...

The question of consistency of the canonical reduction of general relativity (obtained by eliminating constraints and also imposing coordinate conditions in the action or generator) is examined. It is shown that the equations of motion obtained from this ``reduced'' formalism agree with the original Einstein equations. Agreement is also established for the generators of space-time translations. In order to establish consistency, it is necessary to discard certain well-defined divergence terms in the ...

The gravitational effect on the classical Coulomb self-energy of a point charge is calculated rigorously. It is shown that the total mass then becomes finite (although still quite large), and that it depends only on the charge and not on the bare mechanical mass. Thus, a particle acquires mass only when it has nongravitational interactions with fields of nonzero range. In order to treat this problem, it is necessary to extend the canonical formalism, previously obtained for the free gravitational ...

The Hamiltonian for general relativity obtained in a previous paper furnishes a definition of energy whose physical interpretation is direct, and which fulfills the conditions required of the energy in other physical systems. The energy can be expressed as a surface integral at spacial infinity in terms of the spacial components of the covariant metric tensor at any given time. Thus, the energy depends only on the minimal initial Cauchy data and may be evaluated in any coordinate system, provided ...

It is shown that in general relativity a "wave zone" may be defined for systems which are asymptotically flat. In this region, gravitational radiation propagates freely, independent of its interior sources, and obeys the superposition principle. The independent dynamical variables of the full theory which describe the radiation are shown to be coordinate invariant in the wave zone and to satisfy the linearized theory's equations there. Thus, the basic properties of free waves in linear field theories ( ...

The invariance of various definitions proposed for the energy and momentum of the gravitational field is examined. We use the boundary conditions that ${g}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}$ approaches the Lorentz metric as $\frac{1}{r}$, but allow ${g}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu},\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ to vanish as slowly as $\frac{1}{r}$. This permits "coordinate waves." It is found that none of the expressions giving the energy as a two-dimensional surface integral are invariant within this class ...

The Einstein equations for a spherically symmetrical distribution of matter are studied. The matter is described by the stress-energy tensor of an ideal fluid (heat flow and radiation are therefore excluded). In this case, the Einstein equations give a generalization of the Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations of hydrostatic equilibrium so as to include an acceleration term and a contribution to the effective mass of a shell of matter arising from its kinetic energy. A second equation also appears in this ...

Tolman states that "...disordered radiation in the interior of a fluid sphere contributes roughly speaking twice as much to the gravitational field of the sphere as the same amount of energy in the form of matter." The gravitational pull exerted by a system on a distant test particle might therefore at first sight be expected to increase if within the system a pair of oppositely charged electrons annihilate to produce radiation. This apparent paradox is analyzed here in the case where gravitational ...

The problem of the dynamical structure and definition of energy for the classical general theory of relativity is considered on a formal level. As in a previous paper, the technique used is the Schwinger action principle. Starting with the full Einstein Lagrangian in first order Palatini form, an action integral is derived in which the algebraic constraint variables have been eliminated. This action possesses a "Hamiltonian" density which, however, vanishes due to the differential constraints. If ...

It is shown that field theories possessing a certain type of nonlinearity, termed intrinsic, also possess a new type of conservation law in which the conserved quantity is an integer even in the unquantized theory. For the example of general relativity the conserved quantity is shown to assume the values M = 0, ±1, ±2, …. This conservation law (“conservation of metricity”) is valid regardless of any interaction of the metric field with other fields and regardless even of the equation of motion assumed for ...
