For patients who present with an out-of-hospital refractory cardiac arrest, in-hospital extracorporeal life-support (ECLS) initiation represents an alternative therapy which allows significant survival. We describe here the first case of out-of-hospital ECLS implantation in a patient presenting with a refractory cardiac arrest during a road race. ECLS was initiated within the MICU ambulance 60 min after cardiac arrest and enabled restoration of cardiac output to 4.5 l min−1. Coronarography revealed ...

Integrins are transmembrane receptors composed of α and β subunits. Although most integrins contain β1, canonical activation mechanisms are based on studies of the platelet integrin, αIIbβ3. Its inactive conformation is characterized by the association of the αIIb transmembrane and cytosolic domain (TM/CT) with a tilted β3 TM/CT that leads to activation when disrupted. We show significant structural differences between β1 and β3 TM/CT in bicelles. Moreover, the ‘snorkeling’ lysine at the TM/CT interface ...

The uterine uptake of tritiated estradiol-17β, at both low (0.6 μg/ kg) and high doses (2.4 μg/kg), in intact or ovariectomized immature rats was inhibited in a dose-related manner by the estrogen antagonist, CN-55,945-27 (l-(2-&p-[α(p-methoxyphenyl)-β-nitrostyryl]-phenoxy&-ethyl)-pyrrolidine monocitrate). With low dose estrogen treatment, CN-55,945-27 did not inhibit estradiol-17β-induced uterine weight increases in the intact rats. However, in the ovariectomized rats, the high dose of CN-55, 945- ...

Loss of β1 integrin expression inhibits renal collecting-system development. Two highly conserved NPXY motifs in the distal β1 tail regulate integrin function by associating with phosphtyrosine binding (PTB) proteins, such as talin and kindlin. Here, we define the roles of these two tyrosines in collecting-system development and delineate the structural determinants of the distal β1 tail using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Mice carrying alanine mutations have moderate renal collecting-system developmental ...

Kidney collecting system development requires integrin-dependent cell-extracellular matrix interactions. Integrins are heterodimeric transmembrane receptors consisting of α and β subunits; crucial integrins in the kidney collecting system express the β1 subunit. The β1 cytoplasmic tail has two NPxY motifs that mediate functions by binding to cytoplasmic signaling and scaffolding molecules. Talins, scaffolding proteins that bind to the membrane proximal NPxY motif, are proposed to activate integrins ...

Clinical trials have demonstrated partial protection against HIV-1 infection by vaginal microbicide formulations based on antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. Improved formulations that will maintain sustained drug concentrations at viral target sites in the cervicovaginal mucosa are needed. We have previously demonstrated that treatment of cervicovaginal cell lines with ARV drugs can alter gene expression of drug transporters, suggesting that the mucosal disposition of ARV drugs delivered vaginally can be ...

Significance Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) for cancer is based on the selective uptake of 10 B target compounds by tumor cells followed by neutron irradiation. The capture reaction between 10 B atoms and neutrons gives rise to short-range particles, which are highly effective in producing cell damage. Thus, BNCT is designed to damage tumor cells and preserve healthy cells. The boron carrier used is pivotal to the success of BNCT. The present study describes the therapeutic success of BNCT ...

The surface energy of the implant surface has an impact on osseointegration. In this study, 2 surfaces: nonwashed resorbable blasting media (NWRBM; control) and Ar-based nonthermal plasma 30 days (Plasma 30 days; experimental), were investigated with a focus on the surface energy. The surface energy was characterized by the Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Kaelble method and the chemistry by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Five adult beagle dogs received 8 implants (n = 2 per surface, per tibia). After 2 weeks, ...

Anti-retroviral (ARV) –based microbicides are one of the strategies pursued to prevent HIV-1 transmission. Delivery of ARV drugs to subepithelial CD4+ T cells at concentrations for protection is likely determined by drug transporters expressed in the cervicovaginal epithelium. To define the role of drug transporters in mucosal disposition of topically applied ARV-based microbicides, these must be tested in epithelial cell line-based biopharmaceutical assays factoring the effect of relevant drug transporters. ...

Abstract Aims Heart transplantation (HT) can be proposed as a therapeutic strategy for patients with severe refractory electrical storm (ES). Data in the literature are scarce and based on case reports. We aimed at determining the characteristics and survival of patients transplanted for refractory ES. Methods and results Patients registered on HT waiting list during the following days after ES and eventually transplanted, from 2010 to 2021, were retrospectively included in 11 French centres. The ...

We present a detailed study of paleomagnetism and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility of two cylindrical kilometric folds. These folds are located in the footwall of the Digne thrust, from the southern border of the Vocontian trough. We sampled Bajocian–Bathonian marly limestones at four sites. Rock magnetism is consistent with a mixture of single domain and super-paramagnetic grains of magnetite (Curie temperature at 580 °C, unblocking temperature at about 450–500 °C, wasp-waisted hysteresis cycles). ...

Thermal effects related to burial and hydrothermal alteration leads to chemical remanent magnetization (CRM). We present an experimental study of CRM production by heating claystones at 95 °C. A vertical magnetic field of 2 mT was applied to the claystones during heating and the evolution of the remanence during heating in air is monitored intermittently for up to four months. Solid fragments (9 to 26 g) of claystones are included in a Teflon holder that is placed in the oven under a controlled atmosphere. ...

The collagen-binding integrins alpha1beta1 and alpha2beta1 have profoundly different functions, yet they are often co-expressed in epithelial cells. When both integrins are expressed in the same cell, it has been suggested that alpha1beta1 negatively regulates integrin alpha2beta1-dependent functions. In this study we utilized murine ureteric bud (UB) epithelial cells, which express no functionally detectable levels of endogenous integrins alpha1beta1 and alpha2beta1, to determine the mechanism whereby ...
