The selected temperature of two- to three-inch trout (Salvelinus fontinalis, Mitchill) was determined in a horizontal gradient a number of times during the months of November, December, January, February and March. The data, which were collected over four years, indicated that during the early part of winter (November, December and January), there was a fall of the selected temperature which paralleled in a general way a gradual fall of the acclimation temperature. The consistency of this parallelism ...

Conditioned-response experiments show that both bony fishes and selachians have surface thermal receptors. Electrophysiological studies have demonstrated in selachians two mechanisms which could provide continuous information about constant temperature conditions—the ampullae of Lorenzini and the lateral-line system. In other fishes only one such mechanism has been demonstrated, namely the trunk lateral-line system. Impulses from the ampullae and the lateral-line organs are, apparently, always being ...

1. The distribution of groups of five speckled trout in a longitudinal gradient of temperature was studied under a variety of conditions of illumination.2. The modes of the distributions, i.e., the selected temperatures, did not change with successive determinations separated by a week or more. However the selection of temperature became more precise as the fish acquired experience in the apparatus.3. Selection of temperature was apparently more precise at low light intensities than at high intensities ...

Background Approximately 70–80 New Zealanders have spinal cord impairment (SCI) due to injury (2/3) or disease (1/3) each year. They had been socialised as non-disabled people. Following paralysis, interrelationships between body, self and society change. Little is known of the impact of these changes on life histories, life chances and life choices of people with SCI. This has negative implications for the design of rehabilitation and disability support services in New Zealand. Furthermore, the trajectory ...

A subset of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) develops behavioral addictions, which may be due to their dopamine replacement therapy. Recently, several groups have been comparing PD patients with and without behavioral addictions on tasks that are thought to measure aspects of impulsivity. Several of these experiments, including information sampling, a bias toward novel stimuli and temporal discounting, have shown differences between PD patients with and without behavioral addictions. We have ...

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) has been associated recently with a dramatic increase in total copy number variation burden, the cause of which is unclear. In order to explore further the origin and clinical relevance of this finding, we quantified the total genomic copy number variation (CNV) burden in affected patients and evaluated clinical details in relationship to total CNV burden. No correlation was found between total CNV burden and either patient age or time elapsed since symptom ...
