Protease temporary inhibitors are true substrates that bind the catalytic site with high affinity but are slowly degraded, thus acting as inhibitor for a defined time window. Serine peptidase inhibitor Kazal type (SPINK) family is endowed with such functional property whose physiological meaning is poorly explored. High expression of SPINK2 in some hematopoietic malignancies prompted us to investigate its role in adult human bone marrow. We report here the physiological expression of SPINK2 in hematopoietic ...

Renibacterium salmoninarum is an important salmonid pathogen that is difficult to culture. We developed and assessed a real-time, quantitative, polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay for the detection and enumeration of R. salmoninarum. The qPCR is based on TaqMan technology and amplifies a 69-base pair (bp) region of the gene encoding the major soluble antigen (MSA) of R. salmoninarum. The qPCR assay consistently detected as few as 5 R. salmoninarum cells per reaction in kidney tissue. The specificity ...

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen 2 (EBNA2) association with RBP-Jkappa is essential for regulation of virus and cell gene transcription and B lymphocyte transformation into infinitely proliferating lymphoblastoid cells (LCLs). To identify EBNA2-regulated cell genes in LCLs, an EBV recombinant that expresses EBNA2 with its C terminus fused in frame to a 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4HT)-dependent mutant estrogen receptor (E2HTF) was used to transform primary B lymphocytes to LCLs. In the presence of 4HT, ...

The serotonergic system has been widely implicated in stress related psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. We investigated the possible association between depression and anxiety scores and SNPs within the HTR1A and HTR1B genes in a population sample (n = 1387). There was no direct SNP-phenotype association, but in interaction with recent stressful life events rs6295 G, rs878567 T alleles and rs6296 C alleles were associated with significantly higher symptom scores. Although statistically there was significantly greater gain in height and weight in the study year compared to the previous year only for the test group, both groups improved more than expected. Cumulative data analysis showed greater improvement for the Intralipid group (23 of a possible 45 points) compared to the glucose group (-2 points; P less than . ...

Three monoclonal antibodies were produced against the Epstein-Barr virus-induced early antigen complex. These antibodies were shown to be specific for the early antigen complex by the fact that they only reacted with cells supporting a permissive or abortive Epstein-Barr virus infection and their synthesis was not affected by inhibitors of viral DNA synthesis. One monoclonal antibody, designated R3, was directed against a diffuse component of the early antigen complex since it reacted by immunofluorescence ...

All of eight untreated control subjects have developed diabetes, whereas only 1 of 14 treated children has diabetes to date. This data suggests that nicotinamide has an effect in preventing Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes and that randomized ...
