A self-regulating insulin delivery system, based on the concept of competitive binding between synthetic glycosylated insulin (G-insulin) and glucose to concanavalin A (Con A) ligand substrate, has been designed. The competitive binding of the two ligands for the substrate regulates G-insulin release in relation to the outside glucose concentration, while a polymeric membrane, serving as a peritoneal implant pouch containing G-insulin and Con A, is used to control the permeability of glucose influx ...

This paper details current and historic epidemiologic features of Fogo Selvagem (Endemic pemphigus foliaceus) in Brazil. The following features are described. a) The disease occurs in endemic fashion in regions of Brazil within the states of Goias, Mato Grosso do Sul, Parana, Sao Paulo, and Minas Gerais. It appears that the disease is spreading toward the northwest and west, involving the states of Mato Grosso, Para, Maranhao, Rondonia, Acre, and Amazonas. b) People at risk are young peasants or ...

A biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA)/poly(glycolide-co-lactide) copolymer (PLGA) membrane with polyglycolic acid (PGA) mesh was prepared to aid the effective regeneration of defective periodontal tissues. The microporous membrane used in this study consists of biodegradable polymers, and seems to have a structure to provide appropriate properties for periodontal tissue regeneration. Based on the albumin permeation test, it is known that the biodegradable membrane exhibits the suitable permeability ...

Blood transfusion-related adverse reactions have been reported to be caused by leukocytes in blood products. It is now generally accepted that it would be highly desirable to reduce leukocytes level as low as possible. In this study, melt-blown poly(butylene terephthalate) nonwoven (PBT-NW) was treated with a hydroxyapatite (HA) surface-modification method for removal of leukocytes from blood components. Acrylic acid was graft-polymerized onto the surface of the PBT-NW after oxygen plasma glow discharge ...

Endemic pemphigus foliaceus or Fogo selvagem (FS) is an epidermal organ-specific autoimmune disease mediated by autoantibodies. Individuals at risk are peasants who live and work on farms located in the interior of certain endemic states of Brazil. This case-control study compares a group of 52 FS patients with 52 patients suffering from other dermatoses admitted and followed at the hospital for pemphigus (Hospital do Penfigo) in the city of Goiania, state of Goias. Patients and controls matched 1: ...

A self‐regulating insulin delivery system based on the competitive binding of glucose and p‐succinylamidophenyl‐α‐D‐glycopyranoside‐insulin (SAPG‐insulin) to crosslinked concanavalin A (Con A) microspheres (MSs) has been investigated. Con A MSs prepared by a water‐in‐oil emulsion technique demonstrated properties of binding to glucose and SAPG‐insulin (binding constants of 1.25 × 103 and 1.28 × 104 M−1. respectively) that are similar to the literature values of these properties for unmodified Con A. In this work, spray-dried rosemary extracts were obtained. A 33 Box–Behnken design was followed to evaluate the influence of drying conditions on the contents of chemical markers and "in vitro" antioxidant activity of the powder. Although the dry products lost some of their polyphenols, they still had antioxidant activities (IC50) ranging from 17.6 to 24.8 μg · mL−1. Analysis of variance proved that studied factors and some of their interactions significantly affected most of the quality indicators. ...

Onychomycosis is the nail infection caused by a wide spectrum of fungi species, including yeasts, dermatophytes and filamentous fungi non-dermatophytes (FFND). This fungal infection represents an important medical problem because it involves the patient's life quality. The aim was to isolate and identify the fungal agents of onychomycosis, and to determine the in vitro susceptibility to antifungal agents.During the period of March 2008 to March 2009, 114 patients clinically suspected of having onychomycosis ...

Abstract Background To better understand the potential ecotoxicological impacts of silver nanoparticles released into freshwater environments, the Daphnia magna 48-hour immobilization test was used. Methods The toxicities of silver nitrate, two types of colloidal silver nanoparticles, and a suspension of silver nanoparticles were assessed and compared using standard OECD guidelines. Also, the swimming behavior and visible uptake of the nanoparticles by Daphnia were investigated and compared. The ...

A 23 full factorial design was used to assess the impact of spraying air flow rate (30-50 L/min), drying air inlet temperature (90-150 °C) and extract feed rate (4-6 g/min) on the quality of Eugenia dysenterica DC., Myrtaceae, spray-dried extracts. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to analyze the signii cance of the effects of process factors on product quality and to obtain fitted equations to predict dry powder properties. Powder yields were satisfactory, ranging from 34.64 to 63.92%. ...

We studied three pregnant women with acute chagasic infection. Two patients, infected in the third trimester of pregnancy, had uninfected children. The third patient, infected earlier, had an infected newborn. These results encourage research on risk factors of transmission and on medical decisions concerning pregnant women with acute Chagas' disease.

Patients with vitiligo show specific losses of integumentary melanocytes, probably due to autoimmunity against melanocytes. We attempted to determine the presence of antibodies against pigment cell antigens in the sera of vitiligo patients.Detergent-solubilized human melanoma cells were submitted to electrophoretic separation and immunoblotted against serum samples obtained from 19 patients with vitiligo and from 20 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals.Eighty-nine per cent of patients with vitiligo ...
