Understanding factors affecting the susceptibility of organisms to thermal stress is of enormous interest in light of our rapidly changing climate. When adaptation is limited, thermal acclimation and deacclimation abilities of organisms are critical for population persistence through a period of thermal stress. Holobionts (hosts plus associated symbionts) are key components of various ecosystems, such as coral reefs, yet the contributions of their two partners to holobiont thermal plasticity are ...

Approximately 5% of patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) exhibit mild mesangial lesions with acute onset nephrotic syndrome and diffuse foot process effacement representative of minimal change disease (MCD). It is not clear whether these unusual cases of IgAN with MCD (IgAN-MCD) are variant types of IgAN or coincidental deposition of IgA in patients with MCD. In a retrospective multicenter cohort study of 18 hospitals in Korea, we analyzed 46 patients with IgAN-MCD. Patients with endocapillary proliferation, ...

Radiation therapy, the most commonly used for the treatment of brain tumors, has been shown to be of major significance in tumor control and survival rate of brain tumor patients. About 200,000 patients with brain tumor are treated with either partial large field or whole brain radiation every year in the United States. The use of radiation therapy for treatment of brain tumors, however, may lead to devastating functional deficits in brain several months to years after treatment. In particular, ...

The battle for iron between invading microorganisms and mammalian hosts is a pivotal determinant of the outcome of infection. The pathogenic fungus, Cryptococcus neoformans, employs multiple mechanisms to compete for iron during cryptococcosis, a disease primarily of immunocompromised hosts. In this study, we examined the role of endocytic trafficking in iron uptake by characterizing a mutant defective in the Sec1/Munc18 (SM) protein Vps45. This protein is known to regulate the machinery for vesicle ...

Cluh is a cytosolic protein that is known to specifically bind the mRNAs of nuclear-encoded mitochondrial proteins and play critical roles in mitochondrial biogenesis. Here, we report the role of Cluh in adipogenesis. Our study shows that mRNA expression of Cluh is stimulated during adipogenesis, and that cAMP/Creb signalling increases its transcription. Cluh depletion impaired proper adipocyte differentiation, with reductions seen in lipid droplets and adipogenic marker gene expression. Interestingly, ...

Significance We sequenced and analyzed the genome of the endangered whale shark, the largest fish on Earth, and compared it to the genomes of 84 other species ranging from yeast to humans. We found strong scaling relationships between genomic and physiological features. We posit that these scaling relationships, some of which were remarkably general, mold the genome to integrate metabolic constraints pertaining to body size and ecological variables such as temperature and depth. Unexpectedly, we ...
