Abstract This research note presents evidence for the oldest Middle Pleistocene Eastern Saharan human activity from the area referred to as the Eastern Desert Atbara River ( EDAR ), Sudan, which is currently threatened by gold mining. Preliminary results of multifaceted analyses indicate the activity of Homo sapiens during MIS 5 as well as Homo erectus during MIS 7–11 or earlier.

신생대 제4기 퇴적층의 절대연대 측정은 OSL, SUP14/SUPC, SUP210/SUPPb, SUP137/SUPCs 등의 방법이 있으며, OSL, SUP210/SUPPb, SUP137/SUPCs 연대 측정을 위해서는 감마선 측정이 매우 중요한 기술이다. 한국지질자원연구원에서는 두 종류의 감마선 측정 시스템이 설치 운영되고 있다. SEGe (Standard Electrode Coaxial Ge Detector, 모델명: GC3020) 감마선 검출기는 OSL의 연간선량을 측정하기 위하여 설치되었으나, 100 keV 이내의 낮은 에너지, 저선량의 감마선 검출에는 적합하지 않아서 SUP210/SUPPb, SUP137/SUPCs 분석법에 활용이 어려웠다. 이번 연구에서는 강릉시 박월동 구석기 유적 내 수직단면으로 노출된 미고화 퇴적층을 대상으로 광여기루미네선스 연대측정을 실시하여 퇴적 시점을 유추하고자 하였다. 6 미터의 미고화 퇴적층 단면에서, 조사지점 하부는 모래질과 자갈질이 우세한 하천퇴적층, 중하부 구간은 모래질과 이질이 교호하는 하천 범람원 퇴적층으로 해석되었다. 조사지점 중상부부터 최상부 구간까지는 붉은색을 띄는 괴상의 이질 퇴적층이 우세하며 수직으로 발달된 토양쐐기가 최소 2매 이상 관찰되었다. 이 구간은 퇴적 구조가 관찰되지 않아 퇴적층의 성인에 대한 해석이 어렵다. 이번 광여기루미네선스 연대측정은 조사지역 퇴적층의 중하부부터 상부 구간까지 총 4개의 시료를 대상으로 산처리를 통하여 분리된 4-11 μm 크기의 세립질 석영을 이용한 방법(fine grain method)과 조립질 석영(90-250 μm)을 이용한 방법(coarse grain method)으로 실시하였다. 광여기루미네선스 연대측정 결과, 조립질 석영은 105± ...

경상북도 경주시 배동의 경애왕릉 부근에는 동쪽에 위치하는 남산과 서쪽을 흐르는 형산강 사이에 단차가 존재하는 미고화 퇴적층이 발달해 있다. 남산은 주로 신생대 초기 화강암으로 구성되며, 형산강 지역은 중생대셰일이 주를 이룬다. 석영을 이용한 광여기루미네선스(OSL: Optically Stimulated Luminescence) 신호의 물리적인 특성은 석영의 기원과 퇴적환경에 따라 차이를 보이는 경우가 있다. 이번 연구에서는 미고화 퇴적층의 퇴적물 기원 및 퇴적환경을 규명하기 위하여 연구단면 퇴적층을 비롯하여 인접한 현생 선상지와 현생 하천 퇴적물에서 각각의 석영을 분리하여 CW (continuous wave) OSL과 LM (linearly modulated) OSL의 신호 특성을 비교 분석하였다. 연구결과, 연구단면 퇴적층에서 획득한 석영의 OSL 신호는 화강암으로 이루어진 남산의 선상지 기원 석영보다 퇴적암으로부터 기원한 형산강 하천 기원 석영의 OSL 신호와 매우 유사한 특징을 보였다. ...
