Nestedness is a statistical measure used to interpret bipartite interaction data in several ecological and evolutionary contexts, e.g. biogeography (species-site relationships) and species interactions (plant-pollinator and host-parasite networks). Multiple methods have been used to evaluate nestedness, which differ in how the metrics for nestedness are determined. Furthermore, several different null models have been used to calculate statistical significance of nestedness scores. The profusion of measures ...

Developing low-embodied energy building materials can significantly contribute to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. However, these new building materials must be properly understood before they can or will be adopted by the construction industry. Rammed earth materials with low greenhouse gas emissions have been developed based on the principles of alkali-activated stabilisation as replacements for conventional construction materials. In previous work by the authors, the strength development, ...

Earthen construction generates interest due to its environmental and economic advantages such as low embodied energy, thermal comfort and low construction cost. Two challenges, namely durability and strength, hinder its application. Tung oil, a sustainable vegetable oil traditionally applied in waterproofing wooden construction, could improve the water resistance and strength of earthen materials. This study aims to detail the multiple roles and mechanisms of Tung oil as a stabilizer. Completely ...

The need for a vast quantity of new buildings to address the increase in population and living standards is opposed to the need for tackling global warming and the decline in biodiversity. To overcome this twofold challenge, there is a need to move towards a more circular economy by widely using a combination of alternative low-carbon construction materials, alternative technologies and practices. Soils or earth were widely used by builders before World War II, as a primary resource to manufacture ...

Timber panels and cold-formed steel sheeting are widely used in the construction industry, especially in prefabricated structures, temporary housing and informal settlements. This is because these materials are widely available, can be cut and fixed with hand tools, and their lightweight makes them easy to transport and build with. When used together, there is a potential for composite action developing between the timber panels and the underlying steel sheeting, which is currently ignored in design. ...

As the Paris Agreement target year of 2030 draws nearer, it is becoming increasingly evident that neither Australia nor many other nations are progressing at a rate sufficient to meet greenhouse gas emissions targets. One area in which to improve performance is in the use of low embodied energy construction materials. Rammed earth (RE) is often considered to be one such material. However, many modern RE variations incorporate cement: a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions. RE materials ...

Earth building is experiencing a renaissance due to the emerging recognition of the damage the construction industry is doing to the global environment. Research over the past three decades has identified the hygroscopic nature of these materials, and our understanding of the factors governing their hydromechanical properties is now mature. However, little work has been done to unify methods to assess material durability: namely, how exposure to degrading agents, predominantly water, impacts a structure’ ...
