We present submillimetre continuum observations of a sample of some of the highest redshift quasars currently known, made with the SCUBA bolometer array on the JCMT. The median redshift of the sample is 5.3. Two z>5 objects are strong (6 sigma) detections, with S(850um)>10mJy. A firm (5 sigma) detection is obtained for the z=5.7 quasar SDSS J1044-0125; and SDSS J1306+0356, at z=6.0, is detected with a signal-to-noise approx. 4. For the remainder of the sample we have obtained sensitive (sigma= ...

Dendritic ecological networks (DENs) are a unique form of ecological networks that exhibit a dendritic network topology (e.g. stream and cave networks or plant architecture). DENs have a dual spatial representation; as points within the network and as points in geographical space. Consequently, some analytical methods used to quantify relationships in other types of ecological networks, or in 2-D space, may be inadequate for studying the influence of structure and connectivity on ecological processes ...

Source confusion defines a practical depth to which to take large-area extragalactic surveys. 3D imaging spectrometers with positional as well as spectral information, however, potentially provide a means by which to use line emission to break the traditional confusion limit. In this paper we present the results of our investigation into the effectiveness of mid/far infrared, wide-area spectroscopic surveys in breaking the confusion limit. We use SAFARI, a FIR imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer ...

Precise, unbiased estimates of population size are an essential tool for fisheries management. For a wide variety of salmonid fishes, redd counts from a sample of reaches are commonly used to monitor annual trends in abundance. Using a 9-year time series of georeferenced censuses of Chinook salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha ) redds from central Idaho, USA, we evaluated a wide range of common sampling strategies for estimating the total abundance of redds. We evaluated two sampling-unit sizes (200 and ...

Abstract Snowmelt‐dominated basins in northern latitudes provide critical habitat for salmonids. As such, these systems may be especially vulnerable to climate change because of potential shifts in the frequency, magnitude, and timing of flows that can scour incubating embryos. A general framework is presented to examine this issue, using a series of physical models that link climate change, streamflow, and channel morphology to predict the magnitude and spatial distribution of streambed scour and ...

Abstract A broader understanding of how landscape resistance influences climate change vulnerability for many species is needed, as is an understanding of how barriers to dispersal may impact vulnerability. Freshwater biodiversity is at particular risk, but previous studies have focused on popular cold‐water fishes (e.g., salmon, trout, and char) with relatively large body sizes and mobility. Those fishes may be able to track habitat change more adeptly than less mobile species. Smaller, less mobile ...

Abstract Streams and rivers host a significant portion of Earth's biodiversity and provide important ecosystem services for human populations. Accurate information regarding the status and trends of stream resources is vital for their effective conservation and management. Most statistical techniques applied to data measured on stream networks were developed for terrestrial applications and are not optimized for streams. A new class of spatial statistical model, based on valid covariance structures ...

Context. The cosmic infrared background (CIB) consists of emission from distant, dusty, star-forming galaxies. Energetically, the CIB is very important as it contains as much energy as the extragalactic optical background. The nature and evolutionary status of the objects making up the background are, however, unclear.

SPIRE, the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver, is the Herschel Space Observatory's submillimetre camera and spectrometer. It contains a three-band imaging photometer operating at 250, 350 and 500 μ m, and an imaging Fourier-transform spectrometer (FTS) covering 194–671 μ m (447-1550 GHz). In this paper we describe the initial approach taken to the absolute calibration of the SPIRE instrument using a combination of the emission from the Herschel telescope itself and the modelled continuum emission ...

Merlyn Isaak, Chris Zynda,

It is pointed out that properly designed and conscientiously constructed, shotcrete can add to the versatility of concrete. Four projects are described here that illustrate not only how shotcrete gets the job done, but that its economy gives a bid that can get the job in the first place. Three of the projects were originally designed for cast-in-place concrete, but shotcrete leveraged economy and schedule by reducing formowrk costs and by incorporating the shotcrete forms into the structures. The ...

The relationship between many fatty acids and respiratory outcomes remains unclear, especially with regard to mechanistic actions. Altered regulation of the process of lung repair is a key feature of chronic lung disease and may impact the potential for pulmonary rehabilitation, but underlying mechanisms of lung repair following injury or inflammation are not well-studied. The epidermal growth factor receptor agonist amphiregulin (AREG) has been demonstrated to promote lung repair following occupational ...
