The McDonald International Panel accepted the Barkhof/Tintoré criteria for providing MRI evidence of dissemination in space to allow a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in patients with clinically isolated syndromes (CIS). We applied these criteria in a large cohort of patients with CIS, representative of those seen in a general diagnostic setting, to assess their accuracy in predicting conversion to definite multiple sclerosis and to identify factors that affect this risk.In a collaborative study ...

Glenys Parry, Chris R. Brewin,

Three models of the relation of negative cognitive style to depression are outlined: (1) a symptom model, where negative cognitions are a symptom of depression, (2) a vulnerability model, where a negative life-event in combination with cognitive vulnerability leads to depression and (3) an alternative aetiologies model, where depression can be precipitated either by stressful life-events or by a negative cognitive style. Differential predictions from the three models were examined in data from a general ...

Domestic dogs are common amongst communities in sub-Saharan Africa and may serve as important reservoirs for infectious agents that may cause diseases in wildlife. Two agents of concern are canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine distemper virus (CDV), which may infect and cause disease in large carnivore species such as African wild dogs and African lions, respectively. The impact of domestic dogs and their diseases on wildlife conservation is increasing in Zimbabwe, necessitating thorough assessment ...

We describe the first case of a patient with factitious disorder who closely simulated a primary immune deficiency disorder - Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID), by surreptitiously ingesting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. He was treated with several expensive and potentially dangerous drugs before the diagnosis was established through collateral information. In retrospect he did not meet the proposed new criteria for CVID. These criteria may prove useful in distinguishing cases of CVID ...

Background Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) and propionic acidemia (PA) are rare hereditary disorders of protein metabolism, manifesting early in life with ketoacidosis and encephalopathy and often resulting in chronic complications. We here report the clinical features and visual outcomes of a case series of paediatric patients with a diagnosis of MMA or PA. Methods Retrospective ...

Paul N. Stavrinou, M. Whitehead, G. Parry, Chris Button,

We present spectrally resolved angular radiation patterns from visible resonant cavity light-emitting diodes. Recording the pattern for a fixed wavelength clearly demonstrates how the overall angular emission is strongly influenced by the relative spectral alignment of the cavity resonance and the underlying quantum well emission, i.e., the detuning. Combined with measurements of total optical power, taken over a range of solid angles, the results highlight the importance of accounting for the collection ...

Ben Jones, Dave A. Parry, Chris E. Cooper,

The development of an underwater near-infrared spectroscopy (uNIRS) device has enabled previously unattainable measurements of peripheral muscle hemodynamics and oxygenation to be taken within the natural aquatic environment. The purposes of this study were (i) to trial the use of uNIRS, in a real world training study, and (ii) to monitor the effects of a swim training program upon muscle oxygenation status in short distance swimming. A total of 14 junior club level swimmers completed a repeated swim ...

Abstract The use of manipulative experiments to study directly the effects of climate change on natural and managed systems is expensive if performed on a large scale: it also relies upon accurate predictions of future climatic conditions. Predictive modelling is less expensive and permits a range of scenarios to be considered but this is only as reliable as the underpinning model. Predicting the suitability of England and Wales for the cultivation of forage maize under climate change was attempted ...
