Hannes Becher, Max R. Brown, Gavin Powell, Chris Metherell, Nick Riddiford, Alex D. Twyford,

Polyploidy is pervasive in angiosperm evolution and plays important roles in adaptation and speciation. However, polyploid groups are understudied due to complex sequence homology, challenging genome assembly, and taxonomic complexity. Here, we study adaptive divergence in taxonomically complex eyebrights (Euphrasia), where recent divergence, phenotypic plasticity, and hybridization blur species boundaries. We focus on three closely related tetraploid species with contrasting ecological preferences ...

Paul Newland, James A. Powell, Chris Creed,

This paper explores the learning styles, perception and cultural biases exhibited by architectual designers. Developing from a need for better information transfer, an awareness of designers' selective information requirement is elucidated. Based upon a series of linked empirical and theoretical studies, an attempt is made to define precisely how designers perceive and learn about their world. These studies indicate that a fourfold strategy for information transfer will lead to more fruitful communication ...

We report on the observation of a persistent ``negative'' photoconductivity effect exhibited in ${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$As/GaAs heterostructures over the temperature range 170T300 K. We believe this to be the first observation of persistent ``negative'' photoconductivity, particularly at these relatively high temperatures. A possible source of the phenomenon is discussed, and suggested to originate from an interaction between the two-dimensional electron ...

Abstract Our study provides an update of the incidence of oesophageal cancer in the West Midland region of England and Wales from 1992–96. A total of 2,671 cases of oesophageal cancer were identified during the 5‐year study period, with an age‐standardised annual incidence (ASR) of 5.24 per 100,000 (95% CI: 5.02, 5.45). Similar numbers of adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma were found. Only 152 (5.6%) had no histology. There was a 5‐fold difference in age‐standardised annual incidence rates ...

Timothy J. Powell, Chris D. Jenkins, Ryuichi Hattori, G. Gordon MacPherson,

Summary The relationships between different dendritic cell (DC) populations are not clearly established. In particular, it is not known how DC generated in vitro relate to those identified in vivo. Here we have characterized rat bone marrow‐derived DC (BMDC) and compared them with DC isolated from spleen (SDC) and pseudo‐afferent lymph (LDC). BMDC express typical DC markers and are mostly OX41 positive and CD4 negative. In contrast to ex vivo DC, some BMDC express Fc receptors. FcR + and FcR − BMDC express ...

Ethnicity has a major impact on the prevalence of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and may also influence disease phenotype. We compared the clinical features of Southern Asian and White CLL patients managed within one UK region. Asians required treatment almost twice as often as Whites (HR, 1.94) and had a shorter time to first treatment (P = 0.0063). This difference remained significant after adjusting for stage, lymphocyte doubling time and IGHV status (P = 0.026). CLL was diagnosed at younger ages ...

Multiple lines of evidence suggest impulsivity comprises two distinct components relevant to substance misuse. Reward drive reflects sensitivity to rewarding stimuli and subsequent approach motivation. Rash impulsiveness reflects the ability to inhibit such approach behavior in light of negative consequences. However, several studies suggest the latter trait to be a more robust predictor. This begs the question as to whether a less parsimonious two-factor model is necessary. This study employed ...

As family and peers are primary socializing agents in the lives of young adults, a social learning based model of communication about HIV/AIDS among dating partners was developed and tested, examining the role of interactions with family and peers in this type of communication. Specifically, the model describes relationships between general communication, communication about sexuality, and communication about HIV/AIDS with parents, peers, and dating partners. Participants were 153 young adult couples ...

Thomas C. Powell, Chris J. Lloyd,

In a recent paper, Powell (2003) studied 20-year performance in 21 industries, using an ordinal performance measure (‘wins’), and the Gini coefficient as a measure of competitive dominance. The findings suggest that firm performance is statistically indistinguishable from performance in non-business domains such as politics, games, sports, and pageants. This paper extends these findings, developing the statistical foundations for a general theory of competitive dominance. The paper presents a Gibrat- ...

The human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) promoter is known to selectively drive transgene expression in many human cancer cells expressing hTERT, the catalytic component of the telomerase ribonucleoprotein complex. We have created a conditionally replicative adenovirus where the viral E1A gene, which is required for viral replication, is under the control of the hTERT promoter (AdhTERTp-E1A). In vitro studies with AdhTERTp-E1A virus on a variety of normal and tumor cell lines have shown ...
