Older people with depression make greater use of healthcare services, but the detection of the disorder is poor. The National Service Framework for Older People recommended screening for depression in acute healthcare settings to improve health outcomes of older people. Previous studies, mainly outside the UK, report widely differing rates for depression that do not usefully inform UK practice. Thus the aim of this study is to estimate, in a large representative sample of older medical inpatients ...

Abstract Normalized difference vegetation index data obtained from polar-orbiting meteorological satellites were used to compare the growing or rainy seasons of 1984 and 1985 for the Sahelian zone of Africa. A substantial difference was found between these two years, with 1985 generally having higher normalized difference vegetation index values indicating higher levels of primary production in 1985 than in 1984. 1 km data were compared for Senegal, Mali, Niger and Sudan, and 7 km data were compared ...

The regional and cellular distributions of glucose transporter protein (GT) and pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) have been studied with an enhanced immunogold method. The results showed significant amounts of GT in neuropil within regions known to exhibit high demands for glucose whilst neuronal perikarya showed little immunostaining. In contrast PDH immunostaining was most intense in neuronal perikarya. The distributions of these proteins were compared and discussed in relation to existing data on local ...

Paul G. Tucker, Chris Rumsey, Philippe R. Spalart, Robert E. Bartels, Robert T. Biedron,

The use of differential equations such as Eikonal, Hamilton-Jacobi and Poisson for the economical calculation of the nearest wall distance d, which is needed by some turbulence models, is explored. Modifications that could palliate some turbulence-modeling anomalies are also discussed. Economy is of especial value for deforming/adaptive grid problems. For these, ideally, d is repeatedly computed. It is shown that the Eikonal and Hamilton-Jacobi equations can be easy to implement when written in ...

Inwardly rectifying K+ channel subunits may form homomeric or heteromeric channels with distinct functional properties. Hyperpolarizing commands delivered to Xenopus oocytes expressing homomeric Kir 4.1 channels evoke inwardly rectifying K+ currents which activate rapidly and undergo a pronounced decay at more hyperpolarized potentials. In addition, Kir 4.1 subunits form heteromeric channels when coexpressed with several other inward rectifier subunits. However, coexpression of Kir 4.1 with Kir ...

William N. Pappano, Qian Zhang, Lora A. Tucker, Chris Tse, Jieyi Wang,

Tumorigenesis is the result of genomic or epigenomic insults and subsequent loss of the proper mechanisms to respond to these alterations leading to unscheduled growth. Tumors arising from these mutations often have altered cell cycles that offer proliferative advantages and lead to the accumulation of additional mutations that can lead to more aggressive phenotypes. Nevertheless, tumor cells must still adhere to the basic tenets of the cell cycle program to ensure their survival by DNA duplication, ...

Abstract Two methods for estimating ten‐day rainfall totals from Meteosat infra‐red imagery were compared for the April–June 1996 ‘long rains’ of Kenya in an area covering the eastern highlands and the Tana and Athi river basins. One of these (the Bristol ‘B4’ method) was then used for rainfall estimation for the whole of Kenya, for November 1996 and the other, the TAMSAT ‘Cold Cloud Duration’ (CCD) method was used to estimate rainfall for the whole of Kenya for November 1997 to April 1998. Phebe Tucker, Chris Candler, Robert M. Hamm, E. Michael Smith, Joseph C. Hudson,

Medical students encountering patients with unfamiliar, unconventional sexual practices may have attitudes that can affect open communication during sexual history-taking. We measured changes in first-year US medical student attitudes toward 22 non-traditional sexual behaviors before and after exposure to human sexuality instruction. An electronic, hand-held audience response system was used in a lecture hall to sample anonymous student attitudes toward this sensitive topic. Several attitudes were ...
