In the Western world most cases of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection are acquired through sexual intercourse and through needle sharing by intravenous drug users (IVDU). The major risk factors for HBV infection in homosexual men include the number of sex partners and receptive and intercourse. In heterosexuals, this risk also rises with an increasing number of sex partners. IVDU consistently show the highest HBV infection rates in Europe and North America, presently accounting for 25 to 50% of all ...

The biodiversity–ecosystem functioning (B–EF) relationship has become of main interest in the last few decades, mostly because of the worldwide increase in species extinctions. However, most of these studies only consider species within single size‐class or trophic level, thereby most likely underestimating ecosystem complexity. To reach more realistic scenarios, we assessed the role of meiofauna (lower size‐class level) on the relationship between macrofaunal biodiversity and multiple benthic ecosystem ...

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSC) have been widely used for their therapeutic properties in many clinical applications including myocardial infarction. Despite promising preclinical results and evidences of safety and efficacy in phases I/ II, inconsistencies in phase III trials have been reported. In a previous study, we have shown using MSC derived from the bone marrow of PPARβ/δ (Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors β/δ) knockout mice that the acute cardioprotective properties of MSC during ...

Given concerns of increasing rates of species extinctions, the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning has become a major research focus over the past two decades. Many studies have shown that biodiversity per se (e.g. species richness) or species-specific traits may be good predictors of changes in ecosystem function. Although numerous studies on this subject have focused on terrestrial systems, few have evaluated benthic marine systems. We used the Limecola balthica community ...

Abstract Homosexual men are at increased risk for infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Both plasma-derived and recombinant deoxyribonucleic acid vaccines have been shown to induce long-standing protective immunity in this population. However, non-responders and weak responders to HBV vaccine have recently become a problem among homosexual men because of an impaired antibody response due to previous infection with human immunodeficiency virus. In addition, human immunodeficiency virus infection predisposes ...

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the leading cause of cardiovascular death and remains the most common cause of heart failure. Reopening of the occluded artery, i.e., reperfusion, is the only way to save the myocardium. However, the expected benefits of reducing infarct size are disappointing due to the reperfusion paradox, which also induces specific cell death. These ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) lesions can account for up to 50% of final infarct size, a major determinant for both mortality and ...

Recently, the concept of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was further extended into Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management (IPPM). Implementation of IPPM strategies entails the combination of actions for pest and pollinator management providing complementary or synergistic benefits for yield and/or quality of the harvest. The aim of this study was to examine IPPM elements (i.e., mixed hedgerow, nesting boxes for mason bees, Osmia spp.) and demonstrate their impact in the practical context of modern ...

Abstract We describe an unusual case of congenitally corrected transposition in which left-sided obstructions included a supravalvar tricuspid ring, a parachute deformity of the valve itself, and coarctation of the aorta. Surgical correction was performed in 3 stages. Initially we repaired the coarctation and banded the pulmonary trunk. Then we removed the band and, finally, attempted unsuccessfully to replace the tricuspid valve. When coarctation of the aorta occurs in congenitally corrected transposition, ...

Background and Aims Recent developments in DNA sequencing, so-called next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods, can help the study of rare lineages that are known from museum specimens. Here, the taxonomy and evolution of the Malagasy grass lineage Chasechloa was investigated with the aid of NGS. Methods Full chloroplast genome data and some nuclear sequences were produced by NGS from old herbarium specimens, while some selected markers were generated from recently collected Malagasy grasses. An open study with a recombinant DNA yeast-derived hepatitis B vaccine (YDV) was carried out in homosexual men to assess the protective efficacy of this vaccine. A total of 278 seronegative volunteers were enrolled to receive three intramuscular doses of either 20 or 40 micrograms at months 0, 1 and 6. Serum specimens were taken at various times up to 36 months; relevant information regarding the occurrence of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexual behaviour was also collected annually. ...

Abstract Aims Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) without return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) despite conventional resuscitation is common and has poor outcomes. Adding extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (extracorporeal-CPR) is increasingly used in an attempt to improve outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acute and long-term benefits of MLC901 in ischemic and reperfused mouse hearts. Ex vivo, under physiological conditions, MLC901 did not show any modification in heart rate and contraction amplitude. However, upon an ischemic insult, MLC901 administration during reperfusion, improved coronary ...

Regulated cell death is a main contributor of myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion (IR) injury during acute myocardial infarction. In this context, targeting apoptosis could be a potent therapeutical strategy. In a previous study, we showed that DAXX (death-associated protein) was essential for transducing the FAS-dependent apoptotic signal during IR injury. The present study aims at evaluating the cardioprotective effects of a synthetic peptide inhibiting FAS:DAXX interaction. An interfering peptide was ...

Abstract In cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, chronic airway infection by Pseudomonas leads to progressive lung destruction ultimately requiring lung transplantation (LT). Following LT, CF-adapted Pseudomonas strains, potentially originating from the sinuses, may seed the allograft leading to infections and reduced allograft survival. We investigated whether CF-adapted Pseudomonas populations invade the donor microbiota and adapt to the non-CF allograft. We collected sequential Pseudomonas isolates and ...
