We identify SMARCD2 (SWI/SNF-related, matrix-associated, actin-dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily D, member 2), also known as BAF60b (BRG1/Brahma-associated factor 60b), as a critical regulator of myeloid differentiation in humans, mice, and zebrafish. Studying patients from three unrelated pedigrees characterized by neutropenia, specific granule deficiency, myelodysplasia with excess of blast cells, and various developmental aberrations, we identified three homozygous loss-of-function mutations ...

Falling films flowing down a vertical plane are unstable due to inertial effects. This instability, first studied by Kapitza in 1948, is always of convective nature. Films flowing underneath an inclined plane are additionally destabilized by gravity as in the classical Rayleigh–Taylor instability for an horizontal plane. In such a situation, the instability can be of absolute nature if the plane is sufficiently inclined from the vertical. Thus, the unstable falling film exhibits an absolute/convective ...

Abstract Winter has long been regarded as a period of minor importance in marine zooplankton ecology with static, low concentrations and growth rates of organisms. Yet, there is growing evidence that winter conditions influence spring bloom strength. With rising water temperatures, growing importance of fish larvae survival during winter and the lack of data to parameterize ecosystem models for this period, research focus shifted on winter zooplankton ecology. To enable looking into past changes ...

Background Anesthesia and sleep share physiologic and behavioral similarities. The anesthetic requirement of the recently identified Drosophila mutant minisleeper and other Drosophila mutants was investigated. Methods Sleep and wakefulness were determined by measuring activity of individual wild-type and mutant flies. Based on the response of the flies at different concentrations of the volatile anesthetics isoflurane and sevoflurane, concentration-response curves were generated and EC50 values ...

This research aimed to improve our understanding of how owners' beliefs and behaviour are associated with obesity in companion dogs. To do this, we employed new theoretical frameworks and integrated previously reported measures to curate a collection of brief, user-friendly self-report measures to assess owner factors. The reliability and validity of these was examined in two phases of empirical research, each with a cross-sectional questionnaire design that also examined the validity of assessing ...

The most common spinal disorder in the elderly is lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), which results in part from ligamentum flavum (LF) hypertrophy. Although prior histologic and immunochemical studies have been performed in this area, the pathophysiology of loss of elasticity and hypertrophy is not completely understood. Molecular spin switches are attractive candidates for controlling the spin polarization developing at the interface between molecules and magnetic metal surfaces1,2, which is relevant for molecular spintronics devices3–5. However, so far, intrinsic spin switches such as spin-crossover complexes have suffered from fragmentation or loss of functionality following adsorption on metal surfaces, with rare exceptions6–9. Robust metal–organic platforms, on the other hand, rely on external axial ligands ...

The amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum possesses genes for 13 different kinesins. Here we characterize DdKif3, a member of the Kinesin-1 family. Kinesin-1 motors form homodimers that can move micrometer-long distances on microtubules using the energy derived from ATP hydrolysis. We expressed recombinant motors in Escherichia coli and tested them in different in vitro assays. Full-length and truncated Kif3 motors were active in gliding and ATPase assays. They showed a strong dependence on ionic strength. ...

Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF) is an essential growth factor during glomerular development and postnatal homeostasis. VEGF is secreted in high amounts by podocytes into the primary urine, back-filtered across the glomerular capillary wall to act on endothelial cells. So far it has been assumed that VEGF back-filtration is driven at a constant rate exclusively by diffusion. In the present work, glomerular VEGF back-filtration was investigated in vivo using a novel extended model based ...

The novel vacuum-evaporable complex [Fe(pypypyr)2] (pypypyr = bipyridyl pyrrolide) was synthesised and analysed as bulk material and as a thin film. In both cases, the compound is in its low-spin state up to temperatures of at least 510 K. Thus, it is conventionally considered a pure low-spin compound. According to the inverse energy gap law, the half time of the light-induced excited high-spin state of such compounds at temperatures approaching 0 K is expected to be in the regime of micro- or nanoseconds. ...

Abstract Large-scale climatic conditions prevailing over the central Baltic Sea resulted in declining salinity and oxygen concentrations in spawning areas of the eastern Baltic cod stock. These changes in hydrography reduced the reproductive success and, combined with high fishing pressure, caused a decline of the stock to the lowest level on record in the early 1990s. The present study aims at disentangling the interactions between reproductive effort and hydrographic forcing leading to variable ...

An upgrade program is planned for the LHC which will smoothly bring the luminosity up to or above 5×1034 cm−2 s−1 sometimes after 2020, to possibly reach an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb−1 at the end of that decade. In this ultimate scenario, called Phase-2, when LHC will reach the High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC), CMS will need a completely new Tracker detector, in order to fully exploit the highly-demanding operating conditions and the delivered luminosity. During 2010 the LHC delivered pp collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. In this paper, the results of comprehensive studies of missing transverse energy as measured by the CMS detector are presented. The results cover the measurements of the scale and resolution for missing transverse energy, and the effects of multiple pp interactions within the same bunch crossings on the scale and resolution. Anomalous measurements of missing transverse energy are studied, and algorithms for their ...

The results of a previous search by the CMS Collaboration for squarks and gluinos are reinterpreted to constrain models of leptoquark (LQ) production. The search considers jets in association with a transverse momentum imbalance, using the MT2 variable. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. Leptoquark pair production is considered with LQ decays to a neutrino and a top, ...
