During 2010 the LHC delivered pp collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. In this paper, the results of comprehensive studies of missing transverse energy as measured by the CMS detector are presented. The results cover the measurements of the scale and resolution for missing transverse energy, and the effects of multiple pp interactions within the same bunch crossings on the scale and resolution. Anomalous measurements of missing transverse energy are studied, and algorithms for their ...

Here we characterize FIS (factor for inversion stimulation), a new cellular component of the λ site-specific recombination pathway. This host protein binds to a specific region in the λ attP overlapping the Xis binding sites and can bind cooperatively with Xis to these sites. FIS stimulates λ excision up to 20-fold in vitro in the presence of suboptimal Xis concentrations, but has no effect in the presence of saturating Xis; FIS has no effect on integrative recombination. FIS can replace one Xis ...

Abstract The goals of the MELANIE project are to determine if disease‐associated patterns can be detected in high resolution two‐dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (HR 2D‐PAGE) images and if a diagnosis can be established automatically by computer. The ELSIE/MELANIE system is a set of computer programs which automatically detect, quantify, and compare protein spots shown on HR 2D‐PAGE images. Classification programs help the physician to find disease‐associated patterns from a given set ...

A 5-year-old Mexican girl had a bilateral, systematized epidermal nevus of a non-epidermolytic, non-organoid type covering large parts of her body with the exception of the scalp. Clinically, this nevus was of a soft, velvety type showing affinity to the large body folds. Histopathological examination revealed orthohyperkeratosis and papillomatosis without granular degeneration and without any abnormality of adnexal structures. During infancy she developed seizures, and subsequently a delayed mental ...

The aim of this article is to explore the relationships that exist between cognitive style, self-regulated learning and academic achievement at different levels in the learning process. The review of specialized literature suggests there is a close relationship between academic performance in general and a student’s cognitive style and ability to regulate learning.

Gap junction channels (GJCs) and hemichannels (HCs) are composed of protein subunits termed connexins (Cxs) and are permeable to ions and small molecules. In most organs, GJCs communicate the cytoplasm of adjacent cells, while HCs communicate the intra and extracellular compartments. In this way, both channel types coordinate physiological responses of cell communities. Cx mutations explain several genetic diseases, including about 50% of autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss. However, the ...

PARP3 has been shown to be a key driver of TGFβ-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and stemness in breast cancer cells, emerging as an attractive therapeutic target. Nevertheless, the therapeutic value of PARP3 inhibition has not yet been assessed. Here we investigated the impact of the absence of PARP3 or its inhibition on the tumorigenicity of BRCA1-proficient versus BRCA1-deficient breast cancer cell lines, focusing on the triple-negative breast cancer subtype (TNBC). We show that ...

Super twisting observers (STOs) are particularly useful in situations where the process model is uncertain or in the presence of non measurable perturbations. Despite their increasing popularity, the selection of design parameters is delicate and is usually performed in an ad-hoc fashion. In this study, a robust design procedure is developed based on assumptions related to the boundedness of the uncertainties, and a computational procedure based on semi-definite programming is proposed and tested ...

The sucrose contained in sugarcane is the main input for sugar production in Mexico. It is thus necessary to examine the ability of Mexican sugarcane farms to provide raw material in order to achieve a better sustainability and competiveness of sugar industry. Therefore, area expansion for sugar, bioenergy and biofuels will depend on weather and soil conditions, production cost changes, land tenure and plot size and the level of continued investment by stakeholders for innovations. Sugarcane cultivation ...

3GPP LTE eMBMS release (Rel-) 14, also referred to as further evolved multimedia broadcast multicast service (FeMBMS) or enhanced TV (EnTV), is the first mobile broadband technology standard to incorporate a transmission mode designed to deliver terrestrial broadcast services from conventional high power high tower (HPHT) broadcast infrastructure. With respect to the physical layer, the main improvements in FeMBMS are the support of larger inter-site distance for single frequency networks (SFNs) and ...

Animal Welfare Attitudes (AWA) are defined as human attitudes towards the welfare of animals in different dimensions and settings. Demographic factors, such as age and gender are associated with AWA. The aim of this study was to assess gender differences among university students in a large convenience sample from twenty-two nations in AWA. A total of 7914 people participated in the study (5155 women, 2711 men, 48 diverse). Participants completed a questionnaire that collected demographic data, typical ...
