ABSTRACT During the filling of the Petit Saut dam in French Guiana, a wildlife rescue operation was conducted for 17 months. Over 900 sloths (Bradypus tridactylus and Choloepus didactylus) were captured along the Sinnamary River in a primary rain forest that was largely undisturbed at the outset. Raw densities of 1.7 B, tridactyluslkm 1 and 0.9 C. didactylusl km 2 were estimated. The distribution of captures was relatively continuous for both species along the rivers; variations most likely reflected ...

The development of functional-structural plant models requires an increasing amount of computer modelling. All these models are developed by different teams in various contexts and with different goals. Efficient and flexible computational frameworks are required to augment the interaction between these models, their reusability, and the possibility to compare them on identical datasets. In this paper, we present an open-source platform, OpenAlea, that provides a user-friendly environment for modellers, ...

Abstract The net exchange formulation (NEF) is an alternative to the usual radiative transfer formulation. It was proposed by two authors in 1967, but until now, this formulation has been used only in a very few cases for atmospheric studies. The aim of this paper is to present the NEF and its main advantages and to illustrate them in the case of planet Mars. In the NEF, the radiative fluxes are no longer considered. The basic variables are the net exchange rates between each pair of atmospheric ...

We have compared Saccharomyces cerevisiae global gene expression in wild-type and mutants (Deltahap2 and Deltahap4) of the HAP transcriptional complex, which has been shown to be necessary for growth on respiratory substrates. Several hundred ORFs are under positive or negative control of this complex and we analyse here in detail the effect of HAP on mitochondria. We found that most of the genes upregulated in the wild-type strain were involved in organelle functions, but practically none of the ...

Analysis of the literature reporting p53 mutations shows that 8% of report display typographical mistakes with a notable increase in recent years. These errors are sometimes isolated, but in some cases, they concern several or even all mutations described in a single article. Furthermore, some works report unusual profile of p53 mutations whose accuracy is difficult to assess. To handle these problems we have developed MUT-TP53 2.0, an accurate and powerful tool that will automatically handle p53 ...

We examine the behavior of spherical silica particles trapped at an air–nematic liquid crystal interface. When a strong normal anchoring is imposed, the beads spontaneously form various structures depending on their area density and the nematic thickness. Using optical tweezers, we determine the pair potential and explain the formation of these patterns. The energy profile is discussed in terms of capillary and elastic interactions. Finally, we detail the mechanisms that control the formation of ...

The reported long-term safety of kidney donation is inconsistent with the impairment of kidney function observed following nephrectomy for renal cell cancer. We aimed to investigate if indication for nephrectomy (kidney cancer vs. living donation) was an independent risk factor for kidney function deterioration.Between 1985 and 2008, 124 patients with localized renal cell carcinoma who meet the criteria used for living donation, underwent radical nephrectomy (group 1) at our institution. Group 1 was ...

Background So far, human antibodies with good affinity and specificity for MUC1, a transmembrane protein overexpressed on breast cancers and ovarian carcinomas, and thus a promising target for therapy, were very difficult to generate. Results A human scFv antibody was isolated from an immune library derived from breast cancer patients immunised with MUC1. The anti-MUC1 scFv reacted with tumour cells in more than 80% of 228 tissue sections of mamma carcinoma samples, while showing very low reactivity ...

Abstract The stochastic stratigraphic well correlation method considers the stratigraphic correlation of well data as a set of possible models to sample and manage uncertainty in subsurface studies. This method was applied to the Malampaya buildup (a well documented offshore gas field located NW of the Palawan Island, Philippines), aged upper Eocene to lower Miocene. Previous studies highlight that rock petrophysical properties are mainly controlled by diagenesis. Correlation rules are thus developed ...

The numerical reconstruction of an in-line digital hologram is a critical point in digital holographic particle image velocimetry. In particular, the shape of the axial profile of the reconstructed particles plays an important role in depth recovery. We show that this profile presents some oscillations when reconstructing by convolution with the Fresnel function. A window can be introduced in the expression of the reconstruction function in order to control these oscillations. The effects of this ...

Estimation of the post-mortem interval (PMI, the time interval between death and recovery of a body) can be crucial in solving criminal cases. Today minimum PMI calculations rely mainly on medical and entomological evidence. However, beyond 4-6 weeks even entomological methods become less accurate. Thus additional tools are needed. Cadaveric fluids released by decomposing cadavers modify the soil environment and thus impact soil organisms, which may thus be used to estimate the PMI. Although the ...

Rapidity and accuracy of algorithms evaluating yearly collected energy are an important issue in the context of optimizing concentrated solar power plants (CSP). These last ten years, several research groups have concentrated their efforts on the development of such sophisticated tools: approximations are required to decrease the CPU time, closely checking that the corresponding loss in accuracy remains acceptable. Here we present an alternative approach using the Monte Carlo Methods (MCM). The approximation ...

We describe a set of two “new generation” general circulation models of the Martian atmosphere derived from the models we originally developed in the early 1990s. The two new models share the same physical parameterizations but use two complementary numerical methods to solve the atmospheric dynamic equations. The vertical resolution near the surface has been refined, and the vertical domain has been extended to above 80 km. These changes are accompanied by the inclusion of state‐of‐the‐art parameterizations ...

The long serum t1/2 of IgGs is ensured by their interaction with the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), which salvages IgG from intracellular degradation. Fc glycosylation is thought not to influence FcRn binding and IgG longevity in vivo. In this article, we demonstrate that hypersialylation of asparagine 297 (N297) enhances IgG serum persistence. This polarized glycosylation is achieved using a novel Fc mutation, a glutamate residue deletion at position 294 (Del) that endows IgGs with an up to 9-fold increase ...

Abstract This paper presents HydroShoot, a leaf-based functional-structural plant model (FSPM) that simulates gas exchange rates of complex plant canopies under water deficit conditions. HydroShoot is built assuming that simulating both the hydraulic structure of the shoot together with the energy budget of individual leaves is the asset for successfully scaling-up leaf to canopy gas exchange rates. HydroShoot includes three interacting modules: hydraulic, which calculates the distribution of xylem ...

In Mammals, microglial cells are considered as the resident immune cells in central nervous system (CNS). Many studies demonstrated that, after injury, these cells are activated and recruited at the lesion site. Leech microglia present a similar pattern of microglial activation and migration upon experimental lesion of CNS. This activation is associated with the release of a large amount of extracellular vesicles (EVs). We collected EVs released by microglia primary culture and compared two different ...

Shoot architecture is a key component of the interactions between plants and their environment. We present a novel model of grass, which fully integrates shoot morphogenesis and the metabolism of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) at organ scale, within a three-dimensional representation of plant architecture. Plant morphogenesis is seen as a self-regulated system driven by two main mechanisms. First, the rate of organ extension and the establishment of architectural traits are regulated by concentrations ...
