Accurate risk stratification of critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is essential for optimizing resource allocation, delivering targeted interventions, and maximizing patient survival probability. Machine learning (ML) techniques are attracting increased interest for the development of prediction models as they excel in the analysis of complex signals in data-rich environments such as critical care.We retrieved data on patients with COVID-19 admitted to an intensive care ...

The aim of this work is to limit charge injection from a semi-conducting electrode into low density polyethylene (LDPE) under dc field by tailoring the polymer surface using a silver nanoparticles-containing layer. The layer is composed of a plane of silver nanoparticles embedded in a semi-insulating organosilicon matrix deposited on the polyethylene surface by a plasma process. Size, density and surface coverage of the nanoparticles are controlled through the plasma process. Space charge distribution ...

The relevance of laparoscopic resection of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) remains debated. The aim of this study was to compare laparoscopic (LLR) and open (OLR) liver resection for ICC, with specific focus on textbook outcome and lymph node dissection (LND).Patients undergoing LLR or OLR for ICC were included from two French, nationwide hepatopancreatobiliary surveys undertaken between 2000 and 2017. Patients with negative margins, and without transfusion, severe complications, prolonged hospital ...

Abstract Background The aim was to analyse the impact of cirrhosis on short-term outcomes after laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) in a multicentre national cohort study. Methods This retrospective study included all patients undergoing LLR in 27 centres between 2000 and 2017. Cirrhosis was defined as F4 fibrosis on pathological examination. Short-term outcomes of patients with and without liver cirrhosis were compared after propensity score matching by centre volume, demographic and tumour characteristics, ...

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is a rare disease with a poor prognosis. In patients where surgical resection is possible, outcome is influenced by perioperative morbidity and lymph node status. Laparoscopic liver resection is associated with improved clinical and oncological outcomes in primary and metastatic liver cancer compared with open liver resection, but evidence on intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is still insufficient. The primary aim of this study was to compare overall survival for a ...

AA7075 aluminum alloy is widely used for several high-technology applications for its high mechanical strength to weight ratio but is still the subject of several studies seeking a further increase in its mechanical properties. A commercial powder is used, either as-received or after ball-milling. Dense AA7075 samples are prepared in one step by Spark Plasma Sintering, at 550 °C with a holding time of 15 min and a uniaxial pressure of 100 MPa. No additional heat treatment is performed. Laser granulometry, ...

Major bile duct injuries (BDI) following cholecystectomy require complex reconstructive surgery. The aim was to collect the liver transplantations (LT) performed in France for major BDI following cholecystectomy, to analyze the risk factors and to report the results.National multicenter observational retrospective study. All the patients who underwent a LT in France between 1994 and 2017, for BDI following cholecystectomy, were included.30 patients were included. 25 BDI occurred in non hepato-biliary ...

High-strength, high-conductivity silver-copper composite wires were prepared by powder metallurgy, spark plasma sintering and room-temperature wire-drawing. Silver nanowires were mixed with a commercial micrometric copper powder (1, 5 and 10 vol% silver). The powders were consolidated by spark plasma sintering in cylinders, which served as precursors for room temperature wire-drawing, producing samples of wires with progressively decreasing diameters. The Vickers microhardness for the wires is higher ...

Diagnosis of hyperfibrinolysis in orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) remains challenging. Euglobulin clot lysis time (ECLT) is not adapted to clinical situations. ROTEM is specific but seldom sensitive to hyperfibrinolysis. The Lysis Timer assesses 'Global Fibrinolytic Capacity' in citrated plasma (GFC/LT). GFC/LT associates reagents for in vitro triggering of the clot (thrombin and calcium) and its lysis (tissue-plasminogenactivator (t-PA)), turbidity signal acquisition by the Lysis Timer, and dedicated ...

Composite powders were prepared by the chemical vapor deposition (CH4/Ar atmosphere) of carbon in the form of 2–8 layers few-layered-graphene (FLG) covering the MgO powder grains, without any mixing step. The composites were consolidated to nearly full (99%) density by spark plasma sintering with no or little damage to the FLG. The FLG is located along the MgO grain boundaries, as opposed to be dispersed as discrete particles or flakes. This causes a dramatic hindrance of the MgO grain growth, the ...

Copper and 1 vol% carbon nanotube-copper cylinders with a micrometric copper grain size and either a unimodal or a bimodal grain size distribution were prepared using spark plasma sintering. The cylinders served as starting materials for room temperature wire-drawing, enabling the preparation of conducting wires with ultrafine grains. The tensile strength for the carbon nanotube-copper wires is higher than for the corresponding pure copper wires. We show that the bimodal grain size distribution ...

We study the pressure induced collapse of single-, double- and triple-wall carbon nanotubes. Theoretical simulations were performed using density-functional tight-binding theory. For tube walls separated by the graphitic distance, we show that the radial collapse pressure, Pc, is mainly determined by the diameter of the innermost tube, din and that its value significantly deviates from the usual Pc∝din−3 Lévy-Carrier law. A modified expression, Pcdin−3=α(1−β2∕din2) with α and β numerical parameters, ...

Abstract Water reduction, which leads to the evolution of hydrogen, is a key cathodic process for corrosion of many metals of technological interest such as magnesium, aluminium, and zinc; and its understanding is critical for design of new alloys or protective treatments. In this work, real-time hydrogen evolution measurement was coupled with potentiodynamic measurements on high-purity aluminium and AA2024-T3 aluminium alloy. The results show that both materials exhibit superfluous hydrogen evolution ...

The mechanisms of electroluminescence from large band gap polymers used as insulation in electric components are still under debate. It becomes important to unravel the underlying physics of the emission because of increasing thermo-electric stress and a possible relationship between electroluminescence and field withstand. We report herein on the cathodoluminescence spectra of polyethylene and polypropylene films as a way to uncover the nature of its contributions to electroluminescence emission. ...

Carbon/alumina coatings on stainless steel are prepared by a sol-gel route, using either carbon nanotubes (8 walls on average) or graphite flakes. The friction coefficient against a steel ball is decreased by a factor of 4–5 compared to pure alumina and wear is reduced by a factor of 2 with graphite flakes. A Raman spectroscopy study of selected specimens outside and inside the worn surface shows that the carbon nanotubes are not dramatically damaged whereas the graphite flakes are broken into graphene ...

A pure copper cylinder with micrometric grains was prepared by spark plasma sintering and was wire-drawn at room temperature. The ultimate tensile strength of the conducting wires is 600 MPa at room temperature. This originates from the propagation of dislocations by an Orowan mechanism in grains smaller than 250 nm.
