Heteronuclear double quantum MAS NMR experiments in the solid state, involving pairs of highly abundant 31P spins and the rare spins 113Cd, 77Se, and 29Si, are described for the three crystalline compounds CdSiP2, CdGeP2, and Ag7PSe6. These experiments offer the opportunity of indirectly detecting the rare-spin resonance via chemical shift evolution of heteronuclear double quantum coherence. For suitable cases, this method results in significantly enhanced detection sensitivities. Criteria for favorable ...

Abstract ATP acts as a growth factor as well as a toxic agent by stimulating P2 receptors. The P2 receptor‐activated signaling cascades mediating cellular growth and cell survival after injury are only incompletely understood. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify the role of the phosphoinositide 3 kinase (PI3‐K/Akt) and the mitogen‐activated protein kinase/extracellular signal regulated protein kinase (MAPK/ERK) pathways in P2Y receptor‐mediated astrogliosis after traumatic injury ...

Medically unexplained symptoms (MUSs) are frequently presented in primary care. Unfortunately, knowledge of these patients and/or symptoms in primary care is still limited. Available research comes mainly from Europe and North America, while the perspectives of cultures such as Africa, Asia and South America are relatively unknown. To bring cultural perspectives together, a symposium and workshop on MUS in primary care was held at the WONCA World Conference 2007 in Singapore.Main goals of this symposium ...

Jie Qin, Barry P. Rosen, Yang Zhang, Gejiao Wang, Sylvia Franke, Christopher Rensing,

In this article, a mechanism of arsenite [As(III)]resistance through methylation and subsequent volatization is described. Heterologous expression of arsM from Rhodopseudomonas palustris was shown to confer As(III) resistance to an arsenic-sensitive strain of Escherichia coli. ArsM catalyzes the formation of a number of methylated intermediates from As(III), with trimethylarsine as the end product. The net result is loss of arsenic, from both the medium and the cells. Because ArsM homologues are ...

Phospho- and sphingolipids are crucial cellular and intracellular compounds. These lipids are required for active transport, a number of enzymatic processes, membrane formation, and cell signalling. Disruption of their metabolism leads to several diseases, with diverse neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic consequences. A large number of phospholipid and sphingolipid species can be detected and measured in human plasma. We conducted a meta-analysis of five European family-based genome-wide association ...

Nikolaus Franke, Christopher Hader,

In order to configure individual products according to their own preferences, customers are required to know what they want. While most research simply assumes that consumers have sufficient preference insight to do so, a number of psychologically oriented scholars have recently voiced serious concerns about this assumption. They argue that decades of consumer behavior research have shown that most consumers in most product categories lack this knowledge. Not knowing what one wants means being unable ...

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is one of the most obvious hallmarks of human presence in an ecosystem. The rapidly increasing use of artificial light has fundamentally transformed nightscapes throughout most of the globe, although little is known about how ALAN impacts the biodiversity and food webs of illuminated ecosystems. We developed a large-scale experimental infrastructure to study the effects of ALAN on a light-naïve, natural riparian (i.e., terrestrial-aquatic) ecosystem. Twelve street ...

Purpose: Electrical neurostimulation enhances tear secretion, and can be applied to treatment of dry eye disease. Using a chronic implant, we evaluate the effects of stimulating the anterior ethmoid nerve on the aqueous, lipid, and protein content of secreted tears. Methods: Neurostimulators were implanted beneath the nasal mucosa in 13 New Zealand white rabbits. Stimulations (2.3–2.8 mA pulses of 75–875 μs in duration repeated at 30–100 Hz for 3 minutes) were performed daily, for 3 weeks to measure ...

The intracellular lifestyle of Salmonella enterica is characterized by the formation of a replication-permissive membrane-bound niche, the Salmonella-containing vacuole (SCV). As a further consequence of the massive remodeling of the host cell endosomal system, intracellular Salmonella establish a unique network of various Salmonella-induced tubules (SIT). The bacterial repertoire of effector proteins required for the establishment for one type of these SIT, the Salmonella-induced filaments (SIF), ...

Activating protein 2 alpha (AP-2α; encoded by TFAP2A) functions as a tumor suppressor and influences response to therapy in several cancer types. We aimed to characterize regulation of the transcriptome by AP-2α in colon cancer. CRISPR-Cas9 and short hairpin RNA were used to eliminate TFAP2A expression in HCT116 and a panel of colon cancer cell lines. AP-2α target genes were identified with RNA sequencing and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing. Effects on cell cycle were characterized in cells ...
