Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) has become a popular technique to survey fish assemblages for a wide range of purposes. BRUV methodology has, however, also varied greatly for a range of reasons. A major dichotomy occurs, in particular, in the time used to sample the fish assemblages i.e. the BRUV set time. The aim of this study was to determine whether differences in set time were likely to affect the conclusions reached by studies using different set times, and what might be the most appropriate ...

The observation that neuroblastoma cells differentiate in response to retinoic acid (RA) in vitro has led to clinical trials using either 13-cis or all-trans RA. Since 9-cis RA may also have important biological functions, we have compared the potential of RA isomers to induce differentiation and inhibit cell proliferation of SH SY 5Y neuroblastoma cells. 9-cis RA at high concentrations is better at inducing morphological differentiation than either all-trans or 13-cis RA and as effective at inhibiting ...

The profile of acidification has declined markedly in recent years, despite significant impacts remaining across large areas of Europe and North America. While evidence of chemical recovery has been reported, the apparent magnitude of improvements depend on the indicator(s) used, the quality of data and length of time series. Evidence of biological recovery is more elusive and questions remain as to the historical and contemporary effects of forestry on acid impacts and recovery. This study uses ...

ABSTRACT In this paper, we investigated the influence of contrasting riparian forest types on upland stream temperatures and the links between thermal regime and standard indices of forest cover. Stream temperature was measured for two hydrological years at multiple sites along two tributaries of the River Dee, Scotland. Riparian cover in the upper reaches of both streams was dominated by Calluna moorland while the lower sections comprised either dense alluvial broadleaved forest (Girnock Burn) or ...

Neuroblastoma cells differentiate in response to retinoic acid and cyclic AMP. We have examined the expression of retinoic acid receptors (RARs) in relation to neuroblastoma differentiation and show that short term exposure of SK N SH, SH SY 5Y AND GI LI N cells to physiological concentrations of retinoic acid results in induction of RAR-β, particularly the lower transcript. Cyclic AMP has no effect on retinoic acid mediated induction and does not alter RAR expression patterns. These data are discussed ...

Abstract Natural tracers (alkalinity and silica) were used to infer groundwater–surface‐water exchanges in the main braided reach of the River Feshie, Cairngorms, Scotland. Stream‐water samples were collected upstream and downstream of the braided section at fortnightly intervals throughout the 2001–2002 hydrological year and subsequently at finer resolution over two rainfall events. The braided reach was found to exert a significant downstream buffering effect on the alkalinity of these waters, ...

Picornaviral 3C proteinases are a group of closely related thiol proteinases responsible for processing of the viral polyprotein into its component proteins. These proteinases adopt a chymotrypsin-like fold [Allaire et al. (1994) Nature 369, 72-77; Matthews et al. (1994) Cell 77, 761-771] and a display an active-site configuration like those of the serine proteinases.
