Parkinson’s disease manifests in movement disorder symptoms, such as hand tremor. There exists an assortment of therapy interventions. In particular deep brain stimulation offers considerable efficacy for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. However, a considerable challenge is the convergence toward an optimal configuration of tuning parameters. Quantified feedback from a wearable and wireless system consisting of an accelerometer and gyroscope can be enabled through a novel software application ...

Thin film materials for photovoltaics such as cadmium telluride (CdTe), copper-indium diselenide-based chalcopyrites (CIGS), and lead iodide-based perovskites offer the potential of lower solar module capital costs and improved performance to microcrystalline silicon. However, for decades understanding and controlling hole and electron concentration in these polycrystalline films has been extremely challenging and limiting. Ionic bonding between constituent atoms often leads to tenacious intrinsic ...

Climatic and geological processes associated with glaciation cycles during the Pleistocene have been implicated in influencing patterns of genetic variation and promoting speciation of temperate flora and fauna. However, determining the factors promoting divergence and speciation is often difficult in many groups because of our limited understanding of potential vicariant barriers and connectivity between populations. Pleistocene glacial cycles are thought to have significantly influenced the distribution ...

Gestational cadmium exposure may impair fetal growth. Coal smoke has largely been unexplored as a source of cadmium exposure. We investigated the relationship between gestational cadmium exposure and fetal growth, and assessed coal smoke as a potential source of airborne cadmium, among non-smoking pregnant women in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where coal combustion in home heating stoves is a major source of outdoor and indoor air pollution. This observational study was nested within the Ulaanbaatar Gestation ...

Significance π-stacking of polynuclear aromatic rings encompasses fundamental scientific phenomena in chemical bonding and photophysics with strong impacts on societal aspects that include electronic devices, DNA/RNA intercalation, and optical sensing of environmental pollutants. This work describes unusually strong π-stacking in a recently synthesized naphthalene-diimide derivative, as well as a prototypical π-stacked molecule, pyrene.
