The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed Standard Reference Material (SRM) 955c, a new caprine-based, four-level blood standard with certified blood lead levels (BLLs) ranging from 0.4 µg/dL (0.02 µmol/L) Pb to 45 µg/dL (2.2 µmol/L) Pb. Certified values are based on ID-ICP-MS. Strict control and accurate measurement of the procedure blank were necessary to minimize uncertainty for the lowest level (Level 1) and obtain a relative expanded uncertainty (k = 2) of 2.6%. The ocean plays a major role in the global carbon cycle through the atmosphere‐ocean partitioning of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Rain alters the physics and carbon chemistry at the ocean surface to increase the amount of CO 2 taken up by the ocean. This paper presents the results of a preliminary study wherein rain measurements in the western equatorial Pacific are used to determine the enhanced transfer, chemical dilution and deposition effects of rain on air‐sea CO 2 exchange. Including these ...

Understanding and predicting biological processes in this area are hampered because the existing in situobserving system focuses primarily on physical measurements and does not observe key biological parameters; the only high spatial and temporal resolution biology-related observations are from the global array of ocean color satellites which provide an estimate of surface chlorophyll ...

Abstract Internally quenched fluorescent (IQF) peptide substrates originating from FRET (Förster Resonance Energy Transfer) are powerful tool for examining the activity and specificity of proteases, and a variety of donor/acceptor pairs are extensively used to design individual substrates and combinatorial libraries. We developed a highly sensitive and adaptable donor/acceptor pair that can be used to investigate the substrate specificity of cysteine proteases, serine proteases and metalloproteinases. ...

Placental dysfunction plays a key role in diseases that affect the fetus in utero and after birth. Aiming to develop a platform for validating in vivo placental MRI and investigations into placental physiology, we designed and built a prototype MRI-compatible perfusion chamber with an integrated MRI receive coil for high SNR ex vivo placental imaging. After optimizing placenta vascular clearing and perfusion protocols, we performed contrast enhanced MR angiography and MR relaxometry on eight carefully ...

“Good” is a fundamental concept present in all cultures, and experts in values and positive psychology have mapped good's many aspects in human beings. Which aspects do laypersons typically access and consider as they make everyday judgments of goodness? Does the answer vary with culture? To address these questions, the authors compiled prototypes of the good person from laypersons' free-listings in seven cultures and used experts' classifications to content-analyze and compare the prototypes. We evaluated outcomes of coiling with and without stents in the multicenter Matrix and Platinum Science Trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients in the Matrix and Platinum Science Trial with unruptured intracranial aneurysms treated per protocol were included. Baseline patient and aneurysm characteristics, procedural details, neurologic outcomes, angiographic outcomes, and ...

With an ultrafast time-resolved photoluminescence system utilizing a Kerr gate, the time-resolved photoluminescence of core and shell constituents within CdSe/CdS dot-in-rod heterostructures is studied as a function of heterostructure size. Measurements performed at low excitation fluence generating, on average, less than one exciton per nanorod, reveal photoluminescence from direct recombination of carriers in the CdS heterostructure rod with lifetime generally increasing from 0.4 ps to 1.3 ps ...

The probe StB12.3 has been used to screen the FMR-1 gene in 42 pedigrees with a distal Xq fragile site for expansion of the CCG repeat and aberrant methylation of the FRAXA locus. Four families did not have a FRAXA mutation and were investigated further. Fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) and molecular analyses showed that three of these families had an expansion at FRAXE and one at FRAXE. Detailed psychiatric, psychological, and behavioural features of three families with FRAXE identified ...
