Members of the genus Pneumocystis are fungal pathogens that cause pneumonia in a wide variety of mammals with debilitated immune systems. Little is known about their basic biological functions, including life cycle, since no species can be cultured continuously outside the mammalian lung. To better understand the pathological process, about 4500 ESTS derived from sequencing of the poly(A) tail ends of P. carinii mRNAs during fulminate infection were annotated and functionally characterized as unassembled ...

Conventional cyber-security intrusion detection systems monitor network traffic for malicious activity and indications that an adversary has gained access to the system. The approach discussed here expands the idea of a traditional intrusion detection system within electrical power systems, specifically power distribution networks, by monitoring the physical behavior of the grid. This is achieved through the use of high-rate distribution Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), alongside SCADA packets analysis, ...

The negative ion photoelectron spectra of the gas-phase, ion-neutral complexes; NO−(Ar)n=1–14, NO−(Kr)1, NO−(Xe)n=1–4, NO−(N2O)n=3–5, NO−(H2S)1, NO−(NH3)1, and NO−(EG)1 [EG=ethylene glycol] are reported herein, building on our previous photoelectron studies of NO−(N2O)1,2 and NO−(H2O)1,2. Anion solvation energetic and structural implications are explored as a function of cluster size in several of these and as a result of varying the nature of the solvent in others. Analysis of these spectra yields ...

Arnold S. Wolfe, Chuck Miller, Heather O'Donnell,

Few popular songs released over the past thirty years start so memorably: that bass riff, ominous, music for Jaws before there was Jaws , so insistent and unforgiving that in GoodFellas (1990), Scorsese has de Niro do nothing but smoke a ‘square’ and look – icily – off screen while the riff sounds its ten-note pattern. And you know what the combination of de Niro's look, those sounds and that smoke mean: somebody is going to get ‘whacked’. Cream's 1968 hit, ‘Sunshine of Your Love’, has been part of the shared ...

Abstract Reactor pressure vessel cladding samples for Ringhals Units 3 and 4 in Sweden were analyzed using retrospective reactor dosimetry techniques. The objective was to provide the best estimates of the neutron fluence for comparison with neutron transport calculations. A total of 51 stainless steel samples consisting of chips weighing approximately 100 to 200 mg were removed from selected locations around the pressure vessel and were sent to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for analysis. ...

In response to the increasing engagement in global health (GH) among pediatric residents and faculty, academic GH training opportunities are growing rapidly in scale and number. However, consensus to guide residency programs regarding best practice guidelines or model curricula has not been established. We aimed to highlight critical components of well-established GH tracks and develop a model curriculum in GH for pediatric residency programs. We identified 43 existing formal GH curricula offered ...

Meat is a food for humans. However, beef consumption in the United States has steadily declined by >14% over the past decade due to a variety of factors, including insufficient knowledge of animal protein. This study quantified all proteinogenic AA as well as nutritionally and physiologically significant nonproteinogenic AA and small peptides in beef cuts from 3 subprimals (chuck, round, and loin). Beef carcasses (n = 10) were selected at 3 commercial packing plants in the United States. Retail-cut samples ...

The adverse physiological effects of flight, caused by ascent to altitude and its associated reduction in barometric pressure, have been known since the first manned balloon flights in the 19th century. It soon became apparent that the way to protect the occupant of an aircraft from the effects of ascent to altitude was to enclose either the individual, or the cabin, in a sealed or pressurized environment. Of primary concern in commercial airline transport operations is the selection of a suitable ...

The ITER Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) system consists of transmission lines made up of individual sections of evacuated, aluminum, circularly corrugated waveguides. The high-intensity beam of electromagnetic radiation, necessary for plasma heating, heats the waveguides and other components in the transmission lines causing the lines to expand and contract. To maintain the structural integrity and the required straightness in the transmission lines, expansion units have to be incorporated into ...

Three series of investigations were carried out with prazosin (PZN) hydrochloride. In the first, hemodynamic effects of PZN were compared with those of hydralazine (HDZ) in 11 patients with chronic congestive heart failure (CHF). In doses up to 5 mg, PZN increased cardiac output (CO) 20% accompanied by a 20% decrease in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (LVFP). HDZ increased CO by 50% with little or no effect on LVFP. An additional 12 patients were given multiple 5 mg doses of PZN at 6-hour intervals ...

The ITER Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) system provides 20 MW of microwave power from 24 gyrotron sources. The power is transmitted through evacuated, corrugated waveguide transmission lines. The aluminum waveguide is cooled by the attachment of water-cooled copper tubes. These are connected through a conductive graphite foil that is used to increase the heat transfer ability between the aluminum and copper. In the regions where the waveguide is joined to a miter bend or to another waveguide section ...

The ITER Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) system will produce a high-intensity beam of electromagnetic radiation for plasma heating. A total of 20 MW of power will be transferred from 170 GHz gyrotrons through multiple transmission lines. The transmission lines consist of evacuated, aluminum, circularly corrugated waveguides that will each transmit up to 1.5 MW for up to 3600 seconds. The waveguides, as well as mirror and polarizer components, will be actively water cooled in order to support the ...

Finite element analysis calculations are performed to determine the temperature profile in sections of the ITER Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) transmission line waveguide. Each aluminum, corrugated waveguide transmission line will transmit up to 1.5 MW of electromagnetic radiation over roughly 200 meters from a 170 GHz gyrotron to heat the plasma in the tokamak. The “ridged tube” waveguide has integral water cooling traces which are lined with copper tubing. Each transmission line includes miter ...
