Animals with complex nervous systems demand sleep for memory consolidation and synaptic remodeling. Here, we show that, although the Caenorhabditis elegans nervous system has a limited number of neurons, sleep is necessary for both processes. In addition, it is unclear if, in any system, sleep collaborates with experience to alter synapses between specific neurons and whether this ultimately affects behavior. C. elegans neurons have defined connections and well-described contributions to behavior. ...

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is among the most consumed cereals in the world. Its growth is severely affected by excessive salinity, leading to considerable negative economic impacts. Thus, BRS Esmeralda and São Francisco rice cultivars, presenting antagonist cultivation recommendations and differential salt tolerance, were selected to examine how salt stress influences ionic homeostasis and photosynthetic capacity. Phenotypic, physiological, molecular, and morphological results indicated that São Francisco ...

Latin America (LATAM) children offer special insight into Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS COV2) due to high-risk race/ethnicity, variability in medical resources, diverse socioeconomic background, and numerous involved organ systems. This multinational study of LATAM youth examined the distinguishing features of acute or late multisystem SARS COV2 with versus without cardiac involvement. A consecutive sample of youth 0–18 years old (N = 98;50% male) presenting with multisystem SARS ...

Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the least understood components of the hydrological cycle. Its applications are varied, from agricultural, ecological and hydrological monitoring, to control of the evolution of climate change. The goal of this work was to analyze the influence that uncertainties in the estimate of land surface temperature (Ts) can cause on ET estimates by S-SEBI model in the Pampa biome area. Also, the specificities of native grassland of Pampa biome related to energy balance were ...

The cryobanks of agouti somatic tissues represent a promising tool for the conservation of this species and of those that are phylogenetically related and endangered. For these purposes, one strategy to guarantee the quality of samples after warming would be to choose the appropriate tissue vitrification technique. Abstract Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a monogenic disorder characterised by high low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) concentrations and increased cardiovascular risk. However, in clinically defined FH cohorts worldwide, an FH‐causing variant is only found in 40%‐50% of the cases. The aim of this work was to characterise the genetic cause of the FH phenotype in Portuguese clinical FH patients. Between 1999 and 2017, 731 index patients (311 children and 420 adults) who met the Simon ...
