Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma is a rare primary malignant liver tumor that differs from conventional hepatocellular carcinoma in several aspects. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical, surgical and histopathological features of fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma and to analyze the factors associated with survival. We identified 21 patients with histopathologically diagnosed fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma over a 22-year period. Clinical information was collected from ...

A local increase in angiotensin 2 after inactivation of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) may induce a redox imbalance in alveolar epithelium cells, causing apoptosis, increased inflammation and, consequently, impaired gas exchange. We hypothesized that N-acetylcysteine (NAC) administration could restore this redox homeostasis and suppress unfavorable evolution in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).This was a double-blind, ...

Abstract Ranaviruses (family Iridoviridae ) cause important diseases in cold-blooded vertebrates. In addition, some occurrences indicate that, in this genus, the same virus can infect animals from different taxonomic groups. A strain isolated from a Ranavirus outbreak (2012) in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, had its genome sequenced and presented 99.26% and 36.85% identity with samples of Frog virus 3 (FV3) and Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV) ranaviruses, respectively. Eight potential recombination ...

Abstract Rational use of water is a major challenge for governments and global organizations, with easy and inexpensive interventions being sought by communities that are not supplied with drinking water. In this context, solar disinfection ( SODIS ) has shown great efficiency for water disinfection. To speed up the process and improve inactivation, we studied the effects of methylene blue ( MB ) as a photodynamic agent because of its ability to absorb visible light (red wavelength) and generate singlet ...

Floral glands that produce substances related to the attraction and reward of pollinators are crucial for the reproductive success of angiosperms. These structures may include nectaries, osmophores, elaiophores, and resin glands and are quite diverse in flowering plants. This chapter presents the diversity of morphologies and substances produced by the floral glands and how they improve the pollinator's attraction. We also describe how some angiosperms and floral visitors may have coevolved leading ...

Coffee is one of the most important commodities worldwide. The industrial processing of coffee cherries generates a considerable volume of by-products such as wastewater, coffee pulp, mucilage, and husk. These by-products have sugars and nutrients that can be converted into value-added products via microbial action. In this study, for the first time, we evaluated the potential of coffee pulp and coffee wastewater as substrate for alcoholic fermentation produce a distilled beverage. The must composed ...

This study was carried out to evaluate the residual effect of three larvicides under laboratory conditions for 100 days in Aedes aegypti. The larval mortality rate was measured without water renewal or with daily water renewal (80%). With temephos, there was 100% mortality in both groups until the 70th day. In the Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti)-WDG test, there was no difference during the first 20 days. With Bti-G, without water renewal, mortality was sustained above 90% for up to 35 days. ...

Introduction and objectives Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the 6th cause of cancer and hepatitis C (HCV) and B (HBV) viruses are the most frequent risk factors for HCC. Patients coinfected with HCV or HBV and HIV present a faster progression to liver fibrosis and higher incidence of HCC. The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival and clinical outcomes of coinfected patients with HCC comparing with non-HIV patients. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study, including 267 HCC patients ...

ABSTRACT Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) is the water‐soluble polymer most often used in flooding applications in the petroleum industry. However, in aqueous solutions at high temperatures, HPAM undergoes hydrolysis of the lateral amide groups, and the presence of salts in the solution can lead to precipitation of this polymer. Therefore, a method was developed to monitor the thermal stability of HPAM solutions in different saline environments and varying temperatures. The proposed test ...
