To assess bone regeneration in critical sized defects in the rabbit calvarium, filled with the bone substitute calcium phosphate cement.Circular bone defects (8mm) were made in both parietal bones of 10 rabbits. One of the defects was filled with the calcium phosphate cement, and the other received autogenous bone harvested from the calvaria. The animals were killed at 3 or 6 weeks (n=5). Data analysis included qualitative assessment of the calvarial specimens and histomorphometric analysis was used ...

A new method is presented based on trinary logic able to check the state of different control variables and synchronously record the physiological and behavioral data of behaving animals and humans. The basic information structure of the method is a time interval of defined maximum duration, called time slice, during which the supervisor system periodically checks the status of a specific subset of input channels. An experimental condition is a sequence of time slices subsequently executed according ...

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been largely used in dentistry. Nevertheless, there is lack of evidence regarding CBCT accuracy in the diagnosis of early periodontal lesions as well as the correlation between accuracy and lesion size. The aim of this study was to evaluate accuracy of CBCT and conventional intraoral radiographs in detecting different-sized interproximal bone lesions created in pig mandibles. The hypothesis was that CBCT accuracy would be superior to radiographs in detecting ...

ABSTRACT Worldwide, 12 million tonnes per year of lubricants are disposed of in the environment through leakages, exhausted gas, incorrect disposal, water–oil emulsions and so on. Some are resistant to biodegradation, representing an environmental threat. One solution to modify this situation is the replacement of mineral oils by biodegradable synthetic lubricants. Esters, whose chemical structures are similar to natural triglycerides, are excellent substitutes for mineral oils. Castor oil contains ...

Severe plastic deformation techniques have been extensively used to improve hydrogen storage properties of magnesium based alloys. In this work, the commercial magnesium alloy ZK60 (Mg-6Zn-1Zr in wt.%) was modified with addition of 2.5 wt.% of mischmetal (55Ce-24La-15Nd-4Pr in wt.%) and subsequently processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) and extensive cold rolling (CR). Due to the mischmetal addition, a network of intermetallic particles was formed at the grain boundaries. Besides Zn and ...

In this investigation the commercial ZK60 magnesium alloy modified with 2.5 wt.% of mischmetal was processed by melt spinning (MS) and equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), both followed by extensive cold rolling (CR). The results indicate that MS was effective to produce small grain sizes in the order of 700 nm, while specimens prepared only by ECAP reached about 50 μm. However, melt spun ribbons showed long activation (first hydrogenation) times of more than 30 h in contrast to ECAP, which took about ...

It was used only the binary solvent ethanol: water (3:7 v/v) without the presence of metal catalyst what enabled the reaction between different isatins with malononitrile in a quick reaction time of 2–5 min and isolated yields 80–96%. When cyanoesters were used as methylene actives, the reactions were longer and the knoenevagel products were obtained 79–92% isolated yields.
