Abstract Background A primary brain cancer diagnosis is a distressing, life changing event. It adversely affects the quality of life for the person living with brain cancer and their families (‘carers’). Timely access to evidence-based information is critical to enabling people living with brain cancer, and their carers, to self-manage the devastating impacts of this disease. Method A systematic environmental scan of web-based resources. A depersonalised search for online English-language resources ...

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is constantly evolving. Prior studies focused on high-case-density locations, such as the northern and western metropolitan areas of the United States. This study demonstrates continued SARS-CoV-2 evolution in a suburban southern region of the United States by high-density amplicon sequencing of symptomatic cases. 57% of strains carry the spike D614G variant, which is associated with higher genome copy numbers, and its prevalence expands ...

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynaecological malignancies. No precancerous lesions have been identified. Bimanual examination has not been proven to be of value as a screening test. Transvaginal ultrasound examination, with or without measurement of CA 125 levels, is currently being evaluated for population screening. Women at high risk of ovarian cancer should be screened annually — with measurement of CA 125 level and transvaginal ultrasound examination.

Complete maturation of oocytes is essential for the developmental competence of embryos. Any interventions in the growth phase of the oocyte and the follicle in the ovary will affect oocyte maturation, fertilization and subsequent embryo development. Oocyte size is associated with maturation and embryo development in most species examined and this may indicate that a certain size is necessary to initiate the molecular cascade of normal nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation. The minimum size of follicle ...

The response of murine, bovine and human oocytes to pure recombinant preparations of human follicle stimulating hormone (rFSH) and luteinizing hormone (rLH) for meiotic maturation and subsequent developmental competence in vitro were examined in the present experiments. Maturation of immature bovine oocytes to the metaphase II stage was significantly increased by the addition of 1 IU/ml of rFSH in combination with either 1 IU/ml rLH or 10 IU/ml rLH. Similarly, embryonic development to the blastocyst ...

It has been postulated that premature shortening of the oocyte growth phase due to the recovery of oocytes from small diameter follicles may be responsible for the developmental anomalies associated with in-vitro maturation. 6-Dimethylaminopurine (DMAP) was used to artificially lengthen the pre-maturation period of oocyte growth, in vitro, by inhibiting germinal vesicle breakdown in mouse and human oocytes. DMAP inhibited the meiotic maturation of mouse and human oocytes and the inhibition was fully ...

Primary oocytes recovered from small and growing follicles of ≥3 mm in the ovaries of untreated women, can be matured in vitro, will fertilize and develop in vitro, and when transferred to the patient, develop to term. However, the implantation rate of cleaved embryos has been disappointingly low and when embryos are allowed to develop beyond the 4-cell in vitro, retardation of development and blockage is frequently observed, with relatively few embryos developing to blastocysts. We have devised ...

OBJECTIVE The polycystic ovarian syndrome is frequently associated with human infertility and is a partially characterized syndrome of unknown aetiology. The aim of this study was to describe the functional integrity of granulosa cells from polycystic ovaries. PATIENTS Follicular aspirates were collected from polycystic ovaries of ovulatory ( n = 24) and anovulatory ( n = 7) patients. Follicular aspirates were also collected from normal ovaries of untreated ( n = 24) and superovulated ( n = 10) subjects. All patients ...

A dose-dependent inhibition of meiotic maturation and embryonic development was observed in both cumulus-enclosed and cumulus-denuded murine oocytes following incubation in the presence of 10, 20, 40, 60 and 80 microM testosterone for 18 h in vitro. Maturation to metaphase II was enhanced in cumulus-enclosed oocytes following maturation in the presence of human pre-ovulatory mural granulosa cells. However, maturation of cumulus-denuded oocytes was enhanced only when oocytes were cultured on a monolayer ...

Variants of concern (VOC) in SARS-CoV-2 refer to viruses whose viral genomes differ from the ancestor virus by ≥3 single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and that show the potential for higher transmissibility and/or worse clinical progression. VOC have the potential to disrupt ongoing public health measures and vaccine efforts. Still, too little is known regarding how frequently new viral variants emerge and under what circumstances. We report a study to determine the degree of SARS-CoV-2 sequence evolution ...

Australia has an evolving national cancer control agenda. In this paper, we review the history and development of cancer control policies in Australia up to the end of 2005, and discuss the principal publications produced by both government and non-government groups which have given rise to cancer control recommendations, goals and targets. These cancer control plans have arisen in response to the impact of cancer on the Australian community and in recognition of the health gains that can be made ...

Introduction Driven by the need to reduce risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and optimise use of health system resources, while maximising patient outcomes, the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted unprecedented changes in cancer care. Some new or modified health care practices adopted during the pandemic will be of long term value in improving the quality and resilience of cancer care in Australia and internationally. The Cancer Australia consensus statement is intended to guide and enhance the delivery of ...

Few interventions have been designed that provide standardised information to primary care clinicians about the diagnostic and treatment recommendations resulting from cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) (tumour board) meetings. Specific objectives were to (1) evaluate template feasibility (acceptability, appropriateness ...

e18628 Background: At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a plan for cancer management during a pandemic did not exist. It soon became clear that without proper planning, cancer outcomes would worsen. Cancer patients are at increased risk of COVID-19 infection, morbidity, and mortality. Health sectors internationally reduced or paused non-urgent cancer care to protect cancer patients from COVID-19. However, disproportionate delays in screening, diagnosis, and treatment can unduly impact cancer outcomes, ...

PURPOSE With successive infection waves and the spread of more infectious variants, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to have major impacts on health care. To achieve best outcomes for patients with cancer during a pandemic, efforts to minimize the increased risk of severe pandemic infection must be carefully balanced against unintended adverse impacts of the pandemic on cancer care, with consideration to available health system capacity. Australian population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) routinely collect information on cancer incidence and mortality. The need for high quality, comprehensive national data on stage at diagnosis to supplement these data are widely recognized in Australia. The collection and dissemination of quality ...

As the COVID-19 vaccine rollout commenced in Australia in early 2021, limited evidence was available internationally about the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines for people with cancer, particularly because cancer patients were largely excluded from the initial clinical trials. As such, people with cancer had many questions about the COVID-19 vaccines. Australia's Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations experience poorer cancer outcomes and have specific ...

When the COVID-19 pandemic began early in 2020, it was clear that it would impact healthcare around the world – but the exact size and scope of that impact for Australia was unknown. Furthermore, the impact on cancer care and considerations for optimal cancer treatment during a pandemic were not initially defined and clinical care decisions had to be made quickly, using the best available information from around the world.
