Salinity limits agricultural yield in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Silicon (Si) benefits plants under abiotic stresses. However, Si fertilization in the yield of onion plants under salt stress are less well known. We conducted a field experiment to evaluate Si fertilization in onion yield, physiology and postharvest quality irrigated with saline water. The experiment was designed in randomized complete blocks, with four replicates, and treatments were arranged in split plots. The ...

Heavy metal pollution by accelerating urbanization is an emerging socio-environmental issue that poses a potential risk to human health and the environment. In this scenario, street dust is a primary source of contaminants. Here, the metal concentrations in street dust of one of the biggest Brazilian cities were assessed aiming to identify and quantify the sources of contamination. The metal bioaccessibility and estimated probabilistic (non)-carcinogenic risks to humans were also evaluated. Thirty- ...

Ultramafic soils are originated from ultramafic rocks such as peridotite and serpentinite and are highly enriched in metals (e.g., Ni, Cr, and Co) and depleted in plant nutrients (e.g., P, K, and Ca). Such characteristics make these soils unfavorable for agriculture and have raised environmental concerns on metal release to the environment. From another perspective, ultramafic soils host a diverse flora with higher endemism than surrounding non-ultramafic areas, which has provided scientists with ...

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element in humans with critical roles in immune functioning and antioxidant systems. Plant foods growing on soils with sufficient Se levels are the primary dietary sources of selenium. Therefore, knowing the factors that drive the concentration of Se in soils is essential to map Se deficiencies and toxicities and implement biofortification programs to enhance foodstuffs' mineral composition. Here, we assessed how geopedology-climate interactions govern the background ...

Many reef fishes move between different coastal systems throughout their ontogeny, but these movements are complex and often not understood. In this study, we examined how the dog snapper (Lutjanus jocu) uses marine and estuarine habitats across the Abrolhos Bank shelf (eastern Brazil) through the analysis of elemental signatures in otoliths. Specimens were sampled in an estuary and adjacent marine region. Ba/Ca, Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca and Mn/Ca were measured by LA-ICPMS along the otolith growth axis to cover ...

Soil contamination by metals threatens both the environment and human health and hence requires remedial actions. The conventional approach of removing polluted soils and replacing them with clean soils (excavation) is very costly for low-value sites and not feasible on a large scale. In this scenario, phytoremediation emerged as a promising cost-effective and environmentally-friendly technology to render metals less bioavailable (phytostabilization) or clean up metal-polluted soils (phytoextraction). ...

However, we currently do not know which one would be the best choice in most patients undergoing anaesthesia. We designed this systematic review with network meta‐analyses to rank the different videolaryngoscopes and the Macintosh direct laryngoscope. We conducted searches in PubMed and a further five databases on 11 January 2021. We included randomised ...

Coastal floodplain soils are characterized by high organic matter content, a strong marine influence and poor drainage. Under these conditions, the soils experience anoxic conditions, which lead to the formation of hypersulfidic materials (mainly pyrite). These soils, called potential acid sulfate soils (PASS), can develop high acidity when drained, transforming themselves into acid sulfate soils (ASS). This transformation usually causes serious environmental impacts. In this context, soil physical, ...

The aim of this study was to show the potential of citric acid in increasing the concentration of Ni, Zn, Co, Cr, Mn and Fe in leaves of the hyperaccumulator Noccaea caerulescens. Synchrotron x-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) images were collected to assess the distribution of metals in leaves. Applying citric acid (20 mmol kg-1) to soil increased in 14-, 10-, 7-, 2- and 1.4- fold the concentration of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cr, respectively, compared to the control. The μ-XRF imaging revealed that Ni and Zn ...

The emission of mercury (Hg) by chlor-alkali plants can pollute soils and sediments, posing risks to the environment and human health. Mangrove ecosystems are particularly sensitive to Hg contamination. Here, we studied the Hg spatial distribution and associated human and ecologic risks in mangrove soils impacted by a chlor-alkali plant. Sixty-six samples of superficial soils were collected from the mangrove of the Botafogo River, Brazil. Mercury contents were determined and ecological and human ...
