This study is an experimental assessment of Clovis knife use. This work is the third contribution in a series of experiments aimed at shedding light on the functional performance of distinct Clovis "point" forms. Here, we used seven replica Clovis point forms, representing the average and extremes of observed Clovis form, in two cutting tasks: rope cutting and clay cutting. Statistical comparison of cutting time, our measure of cutting efficiency, indicated differences among the knife forms in both ...

Transcripts possessing a 5′-triphosphate are a hallmark of viral transcription and can trigger the host antiviral response. 5′-triphosphates are also found on common host transcripts transcribed by RNA polymerase III (RNAP III), yet how these transcripts remain non-immunostimulatory is incompletely understood. Most microRNAs (miRNAs) are 5′-monophosphorylated as a result of sequential endonucleolytic processing by Drosha and Dicer from longer RNA polymerase II (RNAP II)-transcribed primary transcripts. ...

Summary Background Invasive candidosis is increasingly prevalent in seriously ill patients. Our aim was to compare micafungin with liposomal amphotericin B for the treatment of adult patients with candidaemia or invasive candidosis. Methods We did a double-blind, randomised, multinational non-inferiority study to compare micafungin (100 mg/day) with liposomal amphotericin B (3 mg/kg per day) as first-line treatment of candidaemia and invasive candidosis. The primary endpoint was treatment success, defined ...

Eutrophication is the over fertilization of a body of the water by nutrients resulting in enhanced algae growth, and phosphate is usually identified as the cause. In this work, the adsorption of phosphate on chitosan-iron(III)-crosslinked (CH-FeIII-CL) was investigated in an experiment of solid-phase extraction. The isotherm adsorption, kinetic adsorption, and pH study were carried out in thermostatically-controlled batches. The dynamic studies were drivers in glass columns. Batch study shows that ...

The reactions of indium monohalides, InX with haloforms, CHX3, in 1,4-dioxane (diox), produce the dioxane adducts of dihalogeno–dihalogenomethyl–indium(III), X2In(diox)nCHX2 (X = Cl, Br, n = 1; X = I, n = 2) compounds. The ionic derivative [(C2H5)4N] [Cl3InCHCl2] was prepared and its crystal structure determined by X-ray means. The reactions of the X2In(diox)nCHX2 compounds are significantly different from those of the related X2InCH2X compounds. The dihalogenomethyl derivatives react with strong electrophiles ...

This paper presents a study of the use of chitosan–iron(III) crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (Ch-Fe) as an adsorbent for the textile anionic dye Reactive Red 120 (RR120) in batch and fixed-bed systems. The maximum adsorption capacity was calculated from the adsorption isotherms, and well fitted by the Langumir–Freudlich isotherm model. The process followed the kinetic model of pseudo-second-order. In fixed-bed studies, the Thomas, Adams-Bahort and Clark models were applied to the breakthrough curves. ...

The reactivity of indium(III) benzenechalcogenolates (chalcogen = sulfur, selenium) towards organyl halides (organyl = alkyl, allyl, benzyl, acyl) was examined. A practical one-pot method to prepare organyl phenyl chalcogenides from indium metal and diphenyl dichalcogenide was found. The coupling is fairly broad in scope and generally works better for organyl halides capable to produce stable carbocations.

It was reported the adsorption of As(III) on the surface of the chitosan-Fe-crosslinked complex. Theoretical correlation of the experimental equilibrium adsorption data for As(III)/Ch-Fe system is best explained by the non-linearized form Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model. At optimum conditions, pH 9.0, the maximum adsorption capacity, calculated using the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model was 13.4 mg g⁻¹. The adsorption kinetics of As(III) onto Ch-Fe are described by the pseudo-first-order kinetic ...

Presented herein is the synthesis and characterization of a new FeIIIZnII complex containing a FeIII-bound phenolate with a carbonyl functional group, which was anchored to 3-aminopropyl-functionalized silica as the solid support. The catalytic efficiency of the immobilized catalyst in the hydrolysis of 2,4-bis(dinitrophenyl)phosphate is comparable to the homogeneous reaction, and the supported catalyst can be reused for subsequent diester hydrolysis reactions.

Indium(III) halides (chloride and bromide) catalyse the three-component Biginelli coupling of ferrocenyl-1,3-diketones, aldehydes and urea (or thiourea) to give 5-ferrocenoyl-3,4-dihydropyrimidinones. 4-Ferrocenyl-3,4-dihydropyrimidinones were obtained from alkyl-acetoacetates, formylferrocene and urea. The tricyclic compound, 13-ferrocenecarbonyl-9-methyl-11-oxo-8-oxa-10,12-diazatricyclo [7.3.1.02,7]trideca-2,4-6-triene, was synthesized from 1-ferrocenyl-1,3-butanedione, salicilaldehyde and urea.

The objective was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo phosphate binding properties of cross-linked chitosan iron (III) (CH-Fe(III)-CL), a potential oral phosphate binder for treating hyperphosphatemia. At equilibrium, the in vitro phosphate binding of CH-Fe(III)-CL was 23.6 mg g(-1) for simulated gastrointestinal conditions. In hyperphosphatemic rats, CH-Fe(III)-CL was similar to iron sulfate in reducing serum phosphate by about 35%.
