Herein we report the first examples of 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of thiazolidine-derived sydnones with benzyne leading to 1,3-dihydrothiazolo[3,4-b]indazoles. These heterocycles were converted into the corresponding sulfones which were used as precursors of novel benzo-2,3-diazafulvenium methides. These reactive intermediates reacted with N-substituted maleimides affording new 1H-indazoles characterized by an intense yellow color, a property that gives them a potential application as dyes. The ...

The aim of the study was to describe the experience with high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) in a Portuguese Pediatric Critical Care Unit, and to evaluate whether HFOV allowed improvement in oxygenation and ventilation. This was a retrospective observational cohort study of children ventilated by HFOV between January, 2002 and December, 2011. The following parameters were recorded: demographic and clinical data, and blood gases and ventilatory parameters during the first 48 hours of HFOV. ...

Unlike most altimetric missions, CryoSat-2 is not equipped with an onboard microwave radiometer (MWR) to provide wet tropospheric correction (WTC) to radar altimeter measurements, thus, relying on a model-based one provided by the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). In the ambit of ESA funded project CP4O, an improved WTC for CryoSat-2 data over ocean is under development, based on a data combination algorithm (DComb) through objective analysis of WTC values derived from all ...

This study addressed whether species composition and structure, and functional guilds of the fish assemblages associated with rocky substrates changed gradually with the marine-estuarine gradient in Guanabara Bay, following thus the predictions for the ecocline gradient. Fish were sampled quarterly with bottom gillnet sets between September 2010 and December 2011 in four locations of Guanabara Bay, with physical and chemical water variables being concurrently measured during fish surveys. PCA corroborated ...

The [M(salen)] complexes (M = transition metal such as V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Pd) are high versatile coordination compounds, that can be easily immobilised in solid supports or used as building blocks for the assemblage of supramolecular systems, allowing the fabrication of sophisticated molecular materials. According to the composition and structure of the assembled materials, their properties can be fine-tuned and a wide range of applications is possible. This review starts with an overview on ...

Increased oxidative stress during prolonged endurance exercises may result in muscle damage, fatigue and decreased performance. An adequate stress response during training is critical to obtain improved results and high animal welfare standards. The aim of this study was to evaluate the red blood cell haemolysate concentrations of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH) and catalase (CAT) and the plasma concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) from endurance ...

Ectodermal dysplasias are a large group of syndromes characterized by anomalies in the structures of ectodermal origin. There are 2 major types of this disorder, based on clinical findings: hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. This clinical classification is very important because clinical professionals involved with this disease need first a clear and practical method of diagnosis. The main oral manifestation of ectodermal dysplasia may be expressed as hypodontia. ...

Hypercalcemia is a rare metabolic disorder in children and is potentially fatal. It has a wide differential diagnosis, including cancer. Here, we report the case of a previously healthy 3-year-old who was admitted to the emergency room with fatigue, hyporeactivity, fever and limping gait that had evolved over 5 days and that was progressively worsening. On examination the patient was unconscious (Glasgow coma score: 8). Laboratory tests indicated severe hypercalcemia (total calcium 21.39mg/dL, ionized ...

Textural analysis of a Fe–Al–B alloy obtained by directional solidification indicates an average direction of solidification of 〈310〉, close to 〈100〉. The magnetomechanical behavior is characterized by the sensing and actuation sensitivities and respectively. The Fe2B phase does not act as a pinning center against domain wall movement, proved by the achieved reversible thermodynamic condition. This phase also does not degrade the saturation magnetization of the alloy, because it has a high saturation ...

The indiscriminate use of antibiotics has resulted in resistant strains of bacteria, especially of Staphylococcus aureus, which causes relevant skin diseases. With the objective to obtain a novel stable, safe and effective dermatological formulation for the treatment of these skin infections from a natural product, in this work we evaluated in vitro the activity of an aqueous extract of Eugenia dysenterica (EDA) to resistant strains of S. aureus and its cytotoxicity against skin cells. The lateral habenula (LHb) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA), which form interconnected circuits, have important roles in the crucial control of sensory and cognitive motifs. Signaling in the LHb-VTA pathway can be exacerbated during pain conditions by a hyperactivity of LHb glutamatergic neurons to inhibit local VTA DAergic cells. However, it is still unclear whether and how this circuit is endogenously engaged in pain-related cognitive dysfunctions. To answer this question, we modulated this ...
