Ten outbreaks of waterborne acute gastroenteritis (AGE) have been investigated in France since 1998. These outbreaks have affected populations of over 1,000 people, with generally high attack rates. The causal agents have been identified in six of these events. Aetiologies involved mainly noroviruses and Cryptosporidium sp. The point of entry of the contamination was located in the distribution network in five outbreaks (waste water backflows in four cases and one case of contamination induced by ...

ABSTRACT In September 2001, a waterborne outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred in eastern France. Of 31 fecal samples from symptomatic individuals, 19 tested positive for Cryptosporidium with two PCRs targeting the Hsp70 and the 18S rRNA genes of Cryptosporidium . Sequencing of the PCR fragments produced sequences identical to that of Cryptosporidium parvum genotype 1.

We produced a molecular phylogeny of species within the order Strongylida (bursate nematodes) using the D1 and D2 domains of 28S rDNA, with 23 new sequences for each domain. A first analysis using Caenorhabditis elegans as an outgroup produced a tree with low resolution in which three taxa (Dictyocaulus filaria, Dictyocaulus noerneri, and Metastrongylus pudendotectus) showed highly divergent sequences. In a second analysis, these three species and C. elegans were removed and an Ancylostomatina, Bunostomum ...

An industrial waste landfill located within a residential area received 400,000 tons of toxic wastes between 1980 and mid 1988, in Montchanin, France. Triggered by odor nuisances caused by emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), an intense local community concern led to the decision to close the site. A physicians′ practice-based case-control study was conducted in order to evaluate the short-term health impact of the remaining VOC emissions. Eight hundred and sixteen questionnaires were ...

Abstract A retrospective follow-up study was conducted in 1990 to assess the short-term health impacts of an industrial waste landfill. The site, located since 1979 in a French town of 6 000 inhabitants (about 100 m from the nearest houses) released volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air and provoked intense health concern in the community. The landfill was subsequently closed in 1988. Subjects were 694 inhabitants residing in three different parts of town. Individual exposure was estimated, ...

Abstract Summary: Copolyesters containing aliphatic units in the main chain were obtained by reacting high molar mass poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) with ε ‐caprolactone or δ ‐valerolactone at high temperature in the bulk. γ ‐Butyrolactone did not react in these conditions. Thermal properties were studied by DSC and TGA, and structural characterizations were carried out by 1 H NMR spectroscopy and SEC/MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry off‐line coupling. These techniques demonstrate the insertion of lactone ...

Morphological data suggest that, unlike most other groups of marine organisms, scleractinian corals of the genus Stylophora are more diverse in the western Indian Ocean and in the Red Sea than in the central Indo-Pacific. However, the morphology of corals is often a poor predictor of their actual biodiversity: hence, we conducted a genetic survey of Stylophora corals collected in Madagascar, Okinawa, the Philippines and New Caledonia in an attempt to find out the true number of species in these ...

We describe the occurrence in France of a Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ST93 clone, a predominant community-acquired (CA)-MRSA in Australia. In July to August 2012, an outbreak in a scout camp (n=3) and sporadic cases (n=2) of skin and soft tissue infections were reported. Investigations suggested importation of the clone through travel and onward transmission. This illustrates the epidemic potential of this lineage and the role of travellers ...

The taxonomy of corals of the genus Seriatopora has not previously been studied using molecular sequence markers. As a first step toward a re-evaluation of species boundaries in this genus, mitochondrial sequence variability was analyzed in 51 samples collected from Okinawa, New Caledonia, and the Philippines. Four clusters of sequences were detected that showed little concordance with species currently recognized on a morphological basis. The most likely explanation is that the skeletal characters ...
