Silke Voigt, Claudia Jung, Oliver Friedrich, Martin Frank, Claudia Teschner, J. Elis Hoffmann,

The evolution of global ocean circulation toward deep-water production in the high southern latitudes is thought to have been closely linked to the transition from extreme mid-Cretaceous warmth to the cooler Cenozoic climate. The relative influences of climate cooling and the opening and closure of oceanic gateways on the mode of deep-ocean circulation are, however, still unresolved. Here we reconstruct intermediate- to deep-water circulation for the latest Cretaceous based on new high-resolution ...

A panel of five multiallelic and highly informative dinucleotide CA repeat markers flanking the APC gene was used for presymptomatic diagnosis of familial adenomatous polyposis coli (FAP). Marker regions were amplified by PCR. DNA fragments were separated by electrophoresis in denaturing polyacrylamide gels and visualised by ethidium bromide staining. Two or more markers were found to be informative in all nine families tested, and all 23 persons at risk could be diagnosed as affected or unaffected ...

Carbon-isotope stratigraphy has proven to be a powerful tool in the global correlation of Cretaceous successions. Here we present new, high-resolution carbon-isotope records for the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the Maastrichtian stage at Tercis les Bains (France), the Bottaccione and Contessa sections at Gubbio (Italy), and the coastal sections at Norfolk (UK) to provide a global δ13C correlation between shelf-sea and oceanic sites. The new δ13C records are correlated with ...

Claudia Jung, Silke Voigt, Oliver Friedrich,

The Campanian–Maastrichtian transition is characterized by a negative carbon-isotope excursion, the so-called Campanian–Maastrichtian Boundary Event (CMBE), thought to have been triggered by climatic cooling and sea-level fall. This event is known from stable isotope datasets around the world, but little is known about the causal mechanisms of the proposed cooling or the exact timing of this event. A tool both to enhance our knowledge about this event and to highlight the relative timing between ...

SUMMARY Chronic treatment with the LHRH agonist d ‐Ser(TBU) 6 ‐LHRH (l‐9)‐EA (buserelin) has been suggested as a contraceptive method since it has been shown to inhibit ovulation. To elucidate the mechanism of this paradoxical action, we investigated the pattern of gonadotrophin and steroid secretion after the daily intranasal application of 300 μg of the agonist. Ten volunteers with ovulatory cycles received the analogue from Day 1 to Day 22 and 5 mg norethisterone acetate from Day 16 to Day 22. Blood ...

Two unrelated children with developmental delay, anterior chamber-cleavage disorder, proportionate short stature and striking similarity in facial appearance appear to have an identical syndrome. Peters' plus syndrome has to be considered but additional abnormalities not described in this syndrome and their apparently different facies may be evidence for a hitherto undescribed condition. The further malformations both children have in common are cerebellar hypoplasia, hypothyroidism, tracheostenosis ...

Abstract The connection between Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS) and Kawasaki Disease (KD) is not yet fully understood. Using the same national registry, clinical features and outcome of children hospitalized in Germany, and Innsbruck (Austria) were compared. Reported to the registry were 395 PIMS and 69 KD hospitalized patients. Patient age in PIMS cases was higher than in KD cases (median 7 [IQR 4–11] vs. 3 [IQR 1–4] years). A majority of both PIMS and KD patients were male and without ...

Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) in river fan sediments have been used successfully to reconstruct mean annual air temperature (MAAT) and soil pH of the Congo River drainage basin. However, in a previous study of Amazon deep-sea fan sediments the reconstructed MAATs were ca. 10 °C colder than the actual MAAT of the Amazon basin. In this study we investigated this apparent offset, by comparing the concentrations and distributions of brGDGTs in Amazon River suspended particulate ...

Abstract. Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs), which are thought to be transported from soil to marine sediment by rivers, have been used to reconstruct the mean annual air temperature (MAAT) and soil pH of the drainage basin using the methylation index of branched tetraethers (MBT, recently refined as MBT') and cyclization index of branched tetraethers (CBT) from coastal marine sediment records. In this study, we trace the brGDGTs from source to sink in the Tagus River basin, the ...

The distribution of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) in soils has been shown to correlate with the soil pH and the mean annual air temperature (MAT). This has been used to perform palaeoclimate reconstructions based on brGDGTs recovered from palaeosoils, freshwater, and marine sedimentary archives. Recently described 6-methyl brGDGTs were shown to co-elute with the 5-methyl brGDGTs that are used to calculate the CBT and MBT′ indices used as palaeoclimate proxies. The impact ...

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) was collected along the Amazon River in the central Amazon basin and in three tributaries during the rising water (RW), high water (HW), falling water (FW) and low water (LW) season. Changes in the concentration and the distribution of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs), i.e., the methylation index of branched tetraethers (MBT) and the cyclization of brGDGTs (CBT), were seen in the Amazon main stem. The highest concentration of core lipid (CL) brGDGTs ...

To trace the origin of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs), their distribution in soils and suspended particulate matter (SPM) of Amazonian rivers and floodplain lakes ( várzeas ) was studied. Differences in distribution between river SPM and surrounding (lowland) soils suggests an additional brGDGT source to eroded soils in the lowland drainage basin. Erosion of high Andean soils (above 2500 m in altitude) has no major influence because its brGDGT distribution differs substantially ...

The branched vs. isoprenoid tetraethers (BIT) index, which is based on the relative abundance of non-isoprenoidal, so-called branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) versus a structurally related isoprenoid GDGT "crenarchaeol", has been used to trace soil organic carbon (OC) from the continent to the ocean. However, it has been found in some locations that the BIT index can be primarily influenced by crenarchaeol concentrations and brGDGT production in fresh water rather than by soil- ...

The silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) for low light detection has many advantages when compared to existing photon counting detectors, such as high sensitivity, low cost, robustness, and compact hardware. To facilitate the use of SiPM as a portable, field deployable device, an electrical circuit was designed consisting of an amplifier, comparator, and microcontroller. In addition, a 3D printing was used to create a portable cradle for housing the SiPM. To evaluate its detection ability, a laser experiment ...
