The ISO MHEG-5 standard owes its existence to the increasing convergence of broadcast and interactive technologies. It specifies an encoding format for multimedia applications independently of service paradigms and network protocols. The article introduces the MHEG-5 standard, describes examples of functionality, and illustrates an implementation that covers both runtime presentation and multimedia authoring applications.

We have investigated the pattern of expression of classical (alpha, betaI, betaII, gamma), novel (delta) and atypical (zeta) protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms during the course of human hematopoietic differentiation along the closely related megakaryocytic and erythroid lineages. Using in situ immunofluorescence analysis, freshly isolated human pluripotent CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells expressed detectable amounts of all the PKC isoforms investigated. On the other hand, clear-cut differences in ...

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in surface waters is a photochemical source of several transient species such as CDOM triplet states (3CDOM*), singlet oxygen (1O2) and the hydroxyl radical (OH). By irradiation of lake water samples, it is shown here that the quantum yields for the formation of these transients by CDOM vary depending on the irradiation wavelength range, in the order UVB > UVA > blue. A possible explanation is that radiation at longer wavelengths is preferentially absorbed by ...

Sinonasal-related orbital infections (SROIs) are typically pediatric diseases that occur in 3⁻4% of children with acute rhinosinusitis. They are characterised by various clinical manifestations, such as peri-orbital and orbital cellulitis or orbital and sub-periosteal abscesses that may develop anteriorly or posteriorly to the orbital septum. Posterior septal complications are particularly dangerous, as they may lead to visual loss and life-threatening events, such as an intracranial abscess and ...

The prevalence and clinical picture of hypertensive urgencies and emergencies in an emergency department are poorly known. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of hypertensive crises (urgencies and emergencies) in an emergency department during 12 months of observation and the frequency of end-organ damage with related clinical pictures during the first 24 hours after presentation. Hypertensive crises (76% urgencies, 24% emergencies) represented more than one fourth of all medical ...

Electrospinning technique was employed for the synthesis of different TiO2 samples, starting from titanium oxysulfate and titanium n-butoxide (TNBT) as precursors. The electrospun fibers, obtained after optimization of starting solutions, were either calcined in air at 450 °C or treated in 50 mbar of pure oxygen at 450 °C. The main goal was to obtain TiO2 fibers constituted by crystallites with size lower than 10 nm (size largely reported in literature for this kind of synthesis) in the anatase form. ...

Silicon carbide multilayer composites containing short carbon fibres (Csf/SiC) were prepared by tape casting and pressureless sintering. The C fibres were dispersed in solvents with dispersant (Triton X-100) firstly and then mixed with the SiC slurry to make green Csf/SiC tapes. Fibres were homogeneously distributed in the tape and tended to align fairly well along the tape casting direction. The addition of short C fibre hindered the shrinkage in the plane containing the fibres as well as the grain ...

Antibiotic treatment in paediatric rhinosinusitis is still a matter of debate, as the current guidelines have been drafted mainly based on clinical studies published before 2013. Recent modifications in the epidemiological basis of the disease might mean that current treatments are not completely adequate considering the evolving microbiological profile of the disease. The present paper reviews the role of systemic antibiotics in children with acute (ARS), chronic (CRS), recurrent (RARS), and complicated ...

The incidence of acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) in children is difficult to estimate because they are typically treated in outpatient settings and the majority of epidemiological data originate from hospital settings and refer to the most severe illnesses. Therefore, the incidence of ARTIs in a real-world setting remains largely unexplored. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the incidence of ARTIs, upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), and lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) ...

Classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) is a malignancy with complex pathogenesis. The hallmark of the disease is the presence of large mononucleated Hodgkin and bi- or multinucleated Reed/Sternberg (H/RS) cells. The origin of HRS cells in cHL is controversial as these cells show the coexpression of markers of several lineages. Using a proteomic approach, we compared the protein expression profile of cHL models of T- and B-cell derivation to find proteins differentially expressed in these cell lines. A total ...

Abstract The addition of thrombopoietin (TPO) to HEL cells, cultured in a chemically defined serum-free medium, induced a rapid and dose-dependent phosphorylation of the transcription factor CREB on serine133 (PSer133), as detected by Western blot analysis. TPO also significantly increased the transactivation of CRE-dependent promoter, as determined in transient transfection experiments. On the other hand, neither erythropoietin (Epo; 1 to 10 U) nor hemin (10−7 mol/L) were able to significantly stimulate ...

Blood pressure and heart rate were assessed in the recumbent position before treatment and after 30, 120, and 240 min. Comparison of the effectiveness of these drugs was analyzed by Student's t test. Thyroglobulin (Tg), the substrate of thyroid hormone production, is a tumor marker used in the surveillance of differentiated thyroid cancer. Measurement by immunoassay has become increasingly sensitive, providing a window into the presence of residual and recurrent disease. A desirable feature in smart cameras is the ability to autonomously detect any tampering event/attack that would prevent a clear view over the monitored scene. No matter whether tampering is due to atmospheric phenomena (e.g., few rain drops over the camera lens) or to malicious attacks (e.g., occlusions or device displacements), these have to be promptly detected to possibly activate countermeasures. Tampering detection is particularly challenging in battery-powered cameras, where it is not possible ...

Cervical lymphadenopathy is a common disorder in children due to a wide spectrum of disorders. On the basis of a complete history and physical examination, paediatricians have to select, among the vast majority of children with a benign self-limiting condition, those at risk for other, more complex, diseases requiring laboratory tests, imaging and, finally, tissue sampling. At the same time, they should avoid expensive and invasive examinations when unnecessary. The Italian Society of Preventive ...
