The O antigen of the Helicobacter pylori lipopolysaccharide is composed of repeating units of fucosylated Lewis (Le) antigens. The alpha(1,2)-fucosyltransferase (futC) of H. pylori, which catalyzes the conversion of Le(x) to Le(y) by addition of fucose, is subject to slipped-strand mispairing involving a homonucleotide (poly-C) tract. To explore the distribution of Le phenotypes within H. pylori cells grown in vitro, 379 single colonies of strain J166 were examined for Le expression. Two major populations ...

This paper reports an initial analysis of a diary study of rendezvousing as performed by university students. The study’s tentative findings are: (i) usability ratings for communication services are a little worse during a rendezvous (when at least one person is en route) than before (when none have yet departed); (ii) problems rendezvousing caused more stress when the rendezvousing group was large (6 or more participants) than when the group was small, but led to no more lost opportunity. Finding (i) ...

Recent theoretical studies indicate that whereas large excitation amplitudes are needed to produce chaotic motions in single-degree-of-freedom systems, extremely small excitation levels can produce chaotic motions in multi-degree-of-freedom systems if they possess autoparametric resonances. To verify these results, we conducted an experimental study of the response of a two-degree-of-freedom structure with quadratic nonlinearities and a two-to-one internal resonance to a primary resonant excitation ...

This paper models the suitability of homeward commutes as a context for talking on a mobile telephone and text messaging. Analysis of these models identifies when and where large changes in suitability frequently arise. To bring commuters the greatest benefits, these are the changes upon which future applications of context-sensitivity and awareness need to focus.

This paper reports a field evaluation of the mobile phone as a ‘package’ of device and services. The evaluation compares 44 university students' usage and user experience of communication before and during rendezvous. During a rendezvous (en route), students rated many aspects of the experience of phone use less favourably than before a rendezvous (prior to departure). This impairment of experience is attributed to the cumulative effect of various adverse factors that occur more often during rendezvous— ...

The application of Graphical User Interface styles is supported by 'style guides'- books which authoritatively specify a basic set of application controls (interface objects) and user input methods, and which advise when and how to use these controls and input methods. Style guides are typically presented as resources that encourage consistency and re-use. This paper reports a recent project which applied the Microsoft 'Windows' style as a de facto standard, rather than a resource. The style was applied ...

SEVERAL RECENT papers have suggested that the presenting symptomatology in some of the neuroses and functional psychoses has changed, when compared to the earlier classical descriptions. 2,15,19 If these observations are accurate, the changes may be accounted for by such factors as: the earlier recognition and treatment of many psychiatric disorders; the vast cultural and social transformations; modifications and advances in management and treatment techniques applied to psychiatric patients; and ...

Background: African Americans underuse palliative care and hospice services because of a combination of factors including faith beliefs. As the spiritual family for many African Americans, the church presents an opportunity to improve communication about palliative care and hospice and end-of-life (EOL) decision making. Objectives: We conducted a focus group study to understand the cultural and spiritual perspectives that influence decisions about palliative care and hospice among African American ...

The precise role played by HIV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) in HIV infection remains controversial. Despite strong CTL responses being generated during the asymptomatic phase, the virus persists and AIDS ultimately develops. It has been argued that the virus is so variable, and the virus turnover so great that escape from CTL recognition would occur continually, but so far there is limited evidence for CTL escape. The opposing argument is that evidence for CTL escape is present but hard ...

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the visibility and artifacts of commercially available fiducial markers in order to optimize their selection for image-guided stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). From six different vendors, we selected 11 fiducials commonly used in image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT); the fiducials varied in material composition (gold, platinum, carbon), shape (cylindrical, notched/linear, coiled, ball-like, step), and size measured in terms of diameter ( ...

We combine Hubble Space Telescope (HST) G102 & G141 NIR grism spectroscopy with HST/WFC3-UVIS, HST/WFC3-IR and Spitzer/IRAC[3.6\mu m] photometry to assemble a sample of massive (log(M_star/M_sun) ~ 11) and quenched galaxies at z~1.5. Our sample of 41 galaxies is the largest with G102+G141 NIR spectroscopy for quenched sources at these redshifts. In contrast to the local Universe, z~1.5 quenched galaxies in the high-mass range have a wide range of stellar population properties. We find their SEDs are well ...

Protein homeostasis depends on a balance of translation, folding, and degradation. Here, we demonstrate that mild inhibition of translation results in a dramatic and disproportional reduction in production of misfolded polypeptides in mammalian cells, suggesting an improved folding of newly synthesized proteins. Indeed, inhibition of translation elongation, which slightly attenuated levels of a copepod GFP mutant protein, significantly enhanced its function. In contrast, inhibition of translation ...

Abstract This paper collates some of the experience of managers, tutors, and learners who have used live, audio-visual communication systems for distance learning. Eight heuristics are abstracted from this experience and used to reason about how digital communications could make one such system more effective. The heuristics are: (i) encourage other (non-training) uses for the communications network; (ii) encourage the participation of otherwise unavailable experts; (iii) exploit visual images, both ...

Digital competencies and hybrid education have become fundamental tools to promote new learning styles in the context of higher education. The objective of the research was to evaluate the challenges that hybrid education creates with respect to the digital competencies of Peruvian university teachers in times of uncertainty. The approach used was mixed in order to collect both numerical and qualitative data. The population and sample were composed of 189 teachers from three national universities. ...

This paper reports a diary study of rendezvousing as performed by university students. The study compares students' performance when meeting at familiar and unfamiliar rendezvous points. It reports various findings that help to set goals for the development of personal navigation and related services at appropriate levels. For example, when meeting at novel rendezvous points, students: (i) fail to meet as initially agreed more frequently; (ii) report more stress and lost opportunity as a result of ...

Near infrared slitless spectroscopy with the Wide Field Camera 3, onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, offers a unique opportunity to study low-mass galaxy populations at high-redshift ($z\sim$1-2). While most high$-z$ surveys are biased towards massive galaxies, we are able to select sources via their emission lines that have very-faint continua. We investigate the star formation rate (SFR)-stellar mass ($M_{\star}$) relation for about 1000 emission-line galaxies identified over a wide redshift range ...
