Rare earth co-doping of erbium with optically inactive ytterbium or lanthanum ions was investigated in silica fibers for resonant pumping of amplifiers and lasers. The co-dopants are optically inactive when pumped at 1475 nm and therefore their main role is to reduce erbium clustering in solution-doped fibers. We have demonstrated increased efficiencies compared to fibers where no co-dopants are used. With this technique, a single mode Er-La fiber with an Er ion concentration of 0.98x1025 ions/m3, ...

Inverse vulcanization is the method by which molten sulfur can be combined with comonomers to form stable polymers termed "organically modified chalcogenide" or "ORMOCHALC" polymers. One advantage to ORMOCHALC polymers is that they can possess important optical properties, such as high refractive index and strong infrared (IR) transmission, while being easier to fabricate than glass materials with similar optical properties. In the present work, a new ORMOCHALC is fabricated by using tetravinyltin ...

Abstract The recent growth of the school effectiveness research movement is analysed in relation to research on bilingual education. Following a portrayal of school effectiveness studies and an outline of the development of hierarchical linear regression, the article examines ways in which bilingual education research may develop. An argument is made for the adoption of research designs which incorporate a multi‐level model of pupils, classrooms and schools, a wide variety of cognitive and non‐cognitive ...

The cathode current and voltage variations during the film growth indicated cathode poisoning when the nitrogen concentration in the chamber was in the range of 2%–5%. This poisoning was accompanied by a reduced ...

We demonstrate the critical effect of postgrowth annealing temperature on the properties of low-temperature-grown GaAs. By using annealing temperatures substantially below the 500–600 °C commonly reported, GaAs with high resistivity and with carrier lifetimes as short as 100 fs can be routinely obtained. We discuss the optimum, but different, anneal conditions required for terahertz photoconductive emitters and detectors, and illustrate their use in a continuous-wave system.

This chapter reviews the multidimensional research on bilingual education, covering contexts where bilingual children are in transitional classrooms as well as schools where curriculum content is experienced in two (or more) languages. Bilingual education has become a major tool in language reversal planning, since language transmission within families within minority languages typically provides a considerable shortfall in language reproduction. To play its part in language reversal, bilingual education ...
