Abstract Data are presented on the 43 people who died over a 22‐year follow‐up period of a cohort of 128 heroin addicts drawn in 1969 from the newly opened London clinics. The main causes of death were drug‐related, with 18 deaths specifically determined as due to overdose, of which the great majority were among people being prescribed opiates at the lime. The mortality rate was a mean of 1.84% annually, and the excess mortality ratio was 11.9. This excess was highest at the beginning and varied ...

Clive George, Colin Kirkpatrick,
At the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, it was agreed that all countries should develop a national sustainable develop-ment strategy (NSDS) as a key component of implementing the goals of Agenda 21. Progress has been limited. Few countries have established a formal strategy, and many of the strategies that exist have been only partially implemented. This article proposes an approach that addresses the need to improve existing strategic planning mechanisms. The approach is based on a periodic ...

Clive Norris, Colin Dunnighan,
The paper begins by showing that pro‐active policing methods, and in particular the use of paid informers, has become a de facto national policy for policing in the United Kingdom. It reviews some of the literature on this type of policing and suggests that a significant absence in the discussion about police use of informants has been the degree and nature of conflict consequent from such police methods. Drawing on data from an ESRC funded project, the paper then goes on to describe and delineate ...

The cellular transcription factor NF-kappa B stimulates human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) transcriptional initiation, but its role in the retroviral life cycle has not been fully defined. In this report, we show that I kappa B alpha acts as a cellular inhibitor of human retroviral replication through a discrete mechanism, independent of its effect on HIV transcription. I kappa B alpha inhibited HIV replication and gp160 expression by negatively regulating Rev function, most likely acting ...

She was well until age 6 months, when she developed pneumococcal meningitis from which she recovered fully with antibiotic therapy. The family history was notable for the death of 2 male siblings from pneumococcal meningitis in infancy, while another female sibling had died at age 4 months from congenital cardiac abnormalities (Fig 1). Over the following 12 months, ...
