The usage of biostimulants in agriculture has been steadily increasing in recent years, and their benefits have been recognised by growers. The growing interest from industry has led to a boom in the number of products on the market, many of which are derived from a diverse range of sources such as microbials, plant extracts, hydrolysed amino acids and algal extracts. However, there has been a slower recognition of the biostimulant sector by the scientific community. This has been a result of limited ...

Plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) locate host plants by following concentration gradients of root exudate chemicals in the soil. We present a simple method for RNA interference (RNAi)-induced knockdown of genes in tomato seedling roots, facilitating the study of root exudate composition, and PPN responses. Knockdown of sugar transporter genes, STP1 and STP2, in tomato seedlings triggered corresponding reductions of glucose and fructose, but not xylose, in collected root exudate. This corresponded directly ...

With the increased use of neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer, there is a need for pre-operative prediction of prognosis. We aimed to assess the prognostic value of tumour stiffness measured by ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE). A consecutive cohort of patients with invasive breast cancer underwent breast ultrasound (US) including SWE. The following were recorded prospectively: US diameter, stiffness at SWE, presentation source, core biopsy grade, oestrogen receptor (ER) status and pre-operative ...

Abstract Recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) are extremely common, with ~ 25% of all women experiencing a recurrence within 1 year of their original infection. Escherichia coli ST131 is a globally dominant multidrug resistant clone associated with high rates of rUTI. Here, we show the dynamics of an ST131 population over a 5-year period from one elderly woman with rUTI since the 1970s. Using whole genome sequencing, we identify an indigenous clonal lineage (P1A) linked to rUTI and persistence ...

Although protein recapture and catabolism is known as a key function of kidney proximal tubular cells (PTCs), to date, no single protease has been shown to be required. Asparagine endopeptidase (AEP) is an unusually specific endosomal and lysosomal cysteine protease, expressed at high levels in the PTCs of the mammalian kidney. We report that mice lacking AEP accumulate a discrete set of proteins in their PTC endosomes and lysosomes, which indicates a defect in the normal catabolism of proteins captured ...

PHOSPHO1 is a phosphoethanolamine/phosphocholine phosphatase that has previously been implicated in generating inorganic phosphate (Pi) for matrix mineralization. In this study, we have investigated PHOSPHO1 mRNA expression during embryonic development in the chick. Whole-mount in situ hybridization indicated that PHOSPHO1 expression occurred prior to E6.5 and was initially restricted to the bone collar within the mid-shaft of the diaphysis of long bones but by E11.5 expression was observed over ...

Several approaches to the synthesis of ebelactone A 2 are described, culminating in the synthesis of the benzenesulfonate of 2-epi-ebelactone A 161. All the approaches were based on three fragments A, B and C, originally defined in general terms in, but eventually used as the aldehyde 72, the allenylsilane 3 and the aldehyde 139, respectively. They were joined, first B with C, and then B+C with A. In the main routes to fragments A and C, the relative stereochemistry was controlled by highly stereoselective ...

To use the findings to recommend intervention strategies for antimicrobial stewardship in LTCFs.Qualitative semistructured interviews were conducted. The data were analysed by thematic content analysis. After the interviews, the emerging findings were mapped to the theoretical domains framework (TDF), and the behaviour change wheel and behaviour change technique (BCT) taxonomy were used to recommend ...

We estimated these for pregnant women with CD diagnosed before and after delivery. We included all singleton pregnancies between 1997 and 2012 using linked primary care data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink and secondary care Hospital Episode Statistics data.
