Colin F. McDonald, Colin Rodgers,

It has been about a decade since microturbines first entered service in the distributed generation market, and the efficiencies of these turbogenerators rated in the 30–100 kW power range have remained essentially on the order of 30%. In this time frame the cost of fuel (natural gas and oil) has increased substantially, and efforts are now underway to increase the efficiency of microturbines to 40% or higher. Various near-term means of achieving this are underway by utilizing established gas turbine ...

Sensory information is encoded in the response of neuronal populations. How might this information be decoded by downstream neurons? Here we analyzed the responses of simultaneously recorded barrel cortex neurons to sinusoidal vibrations of varying amplitudes preceded by three adapting stimuli of 0, 6 and 12 µm in amplitude. Using the framework of signal detection theory, we quantified the performance of a linear decoder which sums the responses of neurons after applying an optimum set of weights. ...

Idiopathic synesthesia, a neurological condition in which a stimulus in one sense generates a concurrent experience in a different sense, is often considered an example of multisensory integration. Consequently it has been suggested that synesthetes should experience multisensory illusions more consistently and compellingly than typical participants. To test this we measured the sound induced flash fission and fusion illusions in 22 coloured hearing synesthetes and 31 control participants. Analysis ...

J. S. McDonald, Colin W. G. Clifford, Selina S. Solomon, Spencer C. Chen, Samuel G. Solomon,

We used multielectrode arrays to measure the response of populations of neurons in primate middle temporal area to the transparent motion of two superimposed dot fields moving in different directions. The shape of the population response was well predicted by the sum of the responses to the constituent fields. However, the population response profile for transparent dot fields was similar to that for coherent plaid motion and hence an unreliable cue to transparency. We then used single-unit recording ...

Exposure of cortical cells to sustained sensory stimuli results in changes in the neuronal response function. This phenomenon, known as adaptation, is a common feature across sensory modalities. Here, we quantified the functional effect of adaptation on the ensemble activity of cortical neurons in the rat whisker-barrel system. A multishank array of electrodes was used to allow simultaneous sampling of neuronal activity. We characterized the response of neurons to sinusoidal whisker vibrations of ...

In situ measurements have suggested vehicle emissions may dominate agricultural sources of NH3 in many cities, which is alarming given the potential for urban NH3 to significantly increase human exposure to ambient particulate matter. However, confirmation of the prevalence of vehicle NH3 throughout a city has been challenging because of mixing with agricultural sources, and the latter are thus routinely assumed to dominate. Here we report vehicle NH3 emissions based on TROPOMI NO2 and CrIS NH3 ( ...

Representing the orientation of features in the visual image is a fundamental operation of the early cortical visual system. The nature of such representations can be informed by considering anisotropic distributions of response across the range of orientations. Here we used functional MRI to study modulations in the cortical activity elicited by observation of a sinusoidal grating that varied in orientation. We report a significant anisotropy in the measured blood-oxygen level-dependent activity ...

Perception of the spatial structure of the environment results from visual system processes which integrate local information to produce global percepts. Here, we investigated whether particular global spatial arrangements evoke greater responses in the human visual system, and how such anisotropies relate to those evident in the responses to the local elements that comprise the global form. We presented observers with Glass patterns; images composed of randomly positioned dot pairings (dipoles) ...

Damien J. Mannion, J. S. McDonald, Colin W. G. Clifford,

The local orientation structure of a visual image is fundamental to the perception of spatial form. Reports of reliable orientation-selective modulations in the pattern of fMRI activity have demonstrated the potential for investigating the representation of orientation in the human visual cortex. Orientation-selective voxel responses could arise from anisotropies in the preferred orientations of pooled neurons due to the random sampling of the cortical surface. However, it is unclear whether orientation- ...

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare, acute, life-threatening disorder, associated with a deficiency in ADAMTS 13. The majority of acute, idiopathic, adult TTP cases are associated with anti-ADAMTS 13 IgG antibodies. However, the factor(s) precipitating an acute TTP episode are not always obvious; indeed, a multifactorial etiology is likely.DNA was used for human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II typing, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-sequence-specific primer and PCR-sequence-specific ...

Acoustical measurements, electron spin resonance, and Raman spectroscopy have been employed to probe sulfur over the temperature range 80-180 degrees C, which includes the polymerization transition and the supercooled liquid state. Acoustical properties (sound velocity, absorption, and impedance) have been studied with both longitudinal and transverse waves at frequencies between 500 kHz and 22 MHz. The results confirm that polymeric sulfur is a solution of long chain molecules in monomeric solvent, ...

Five strains of obligate methanotrophic bacteria (4G, 5G, 6G, 7G and 5B) isolated from bottom sediments of Southeastern Transbaikal soda lakes (pH 9.5–10.5) are taxonomically described. These bacteria are aerobic, Gram-negative monotrichous rods having tightly packed cup-shaped structures on the outer cell wall surface (S-layers) and Type I intracytoplasmic membranes. All the isolates possess particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) and one strain (5G) also contains soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO). ...
